Dry hop ball

Post by troutie » Wed Apr 01, 2015 8:00 pm

not sure if its been posted before as searched and found nowt

Made a giant dry hop ball today for £6
Bought 2 stainless sieves from TXmax and drilled a few holes in each for at the moment wire ties but will be replaced with stainless bolts later
inside is 70 grams of citra hops and plenty of room for them to drift about in the beer .

Do the sieves have flat or tapered edges, ? I could see hops getting out if the edges move a little with the latter .

But yeh, I'd bee intrested, as it could be a better/bigger version of a tea ball,

Bet it won't fit in a cornie, :? But who cares with that many hops

Sadly tapered. but not a problem its quite solid a mating even with just bits of wire holding it together

no way too big for a corny
and probably no good for hop pellets

Good work... i use two large teaballs. This looks better for high dosing.

Fantastic idea. Next cookware shop I'm in, I'm going to head straight to the sieves! :-)

That's good for large amounts of hops. I use a stainless 13.5cm rice ball- the advantage is it has a built in clip. The disadvantage is it's a bit small for large amounts of dry hoping but I did get them on a BOGOF deal so I've got two which gets round the problem :)

What would be the advantage over using a muslin bag?

This was my version but I never got around using it as a fellow brewer had issues with his, comments on my twitter feed here:

Presumably you are using yours in the kettle? I was going to use mine purely for dry hopping in the FV only, hopefully sinking to the bottom.

Used it in the FV for dry hopping
not tasted anything out of the ordinary in the beer

Seems strange so have popped it into a salt solution to see if it goes rusty

I did think about nasties hiding in the mesh on the lips of each sieve so gave it a good boil before using and will do that each time
