Cleaning beer lines / corny keg sys

Post by Frothy » Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:13 pm

Just got my keg system last friday and its had a bit of use over the weekend (600 pints to be precise.) I sanitized it with a solution of Sod' Met' before use and when I'd finished using the system I flushed it through with water to clear the lines.

I'm not sure what to actually clean the system through with should I be dry storing or wet storing the pipes and equipment?

thanks
Matt

That's one hell of a lot of brewing too if you really did get through 600 pints. Even if you can manage 2 brews in one day. Which I can't.

Also one hell of an expense on equipment too...

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jun 26 2006, 02:35 PM) When you say keg system do you mean Corni kegs or a chiller?

Either way I wouldnt use sodium met as its not that good a sanitiser and it can be corrosive if you leave it for long periods. Use Iodophor (or Betadine which is the same stuff) and blast the lines through with co2 to dry.

The system is using a cooler, gas and 2 corny's, john guest fittings are amazing! The pubs use a chlorine based cleaner similar to bleach, will iodine or betadine be any good for removing sugar residues as thats one of my main concerns? They sound like a great idea from the respect that I'd like to dry store the tubing and the equipment between uses. Where can you get it from?

600 pints was pretty good going, it was beer but ginger beer, my favourite :) The beauty of the corny kegs is being able to open them up and refill them every time they run out.

Betadine isn't a cleaner, it's a sanitiser!

Available over the counter from Boots, they'll have to order it for you - costs about £3 / 500ml.
