Buying kettle elements

Has anyone bought a 2.4 kW kettle element from these people?

and if so, is it any good? It looks a bit cheaper then the Backer one here:

but there's precious litte information about either on the web sites.

I bought similar elements but found them very difficult to seal.
Mine came with a plastic back-nut that was useless and I couldn't find a suitable replacement.

I ended up going back to my argos elements

I can't comment on the element unfortunately as I've not bought from them before, though it at least looks very similar..

Spud, if its of use I think people have used the KM8 nuts from bearingboys, but there are two kinds of element a 2.7kw round plugged one and a 2.4kw IEC plugged one and I can't remember if the nut fits both types or not.

The first ones mentioned look identical to the hop&Grape ones, they accept the KM nuts as Kevs post.

Thanks everyone. I'm not interested in the cheapo elements because I've had too much trouble with them and want to upgrade to something that'll last.

Since posting, I've read a few things about the Electrim elements (backnut failing and thermostat cutting out) that make me think the Backer elements would be a better bet. I know there are issues with the backnut on these too, but if the KM8 bearing nut is known to work with them, then that's probably OK. (Of course, I do still have a nagging suspicion that both elements are actually the same but it seems I'm unlikely to find out without buying both.)

BTW if you search KM8 on eBay, you can find something that looks to be the same thing but works out quite a bit cheaper when you add P&P:

Alternatively, if you Google you can find people charging nearly 30 quid for the same thing. That's just nutty!

Just one niggling thing in the back of my mind, I think the KM nuts come in 2 different grades of stainless, I believe several members had reported that the cheaper ones were prone to rusting.

Cant find the forum post but the bearingboys do have 2 types available I went for the more expensive of the 2

I've always used the old fashioned elements from here without any problems

They seem to seal ok on s/s so I would think on plastic they would be ok too. I always put a thin smear of silicone sealant on the washer before tightening - and don't over tighten them.

The PECO services elements now they're out of stock or £30+ each .. I would ideally something to fit my 40mm qmax cutter and not break the bank !

I see both of the heating element company units are in stock?

Brewbuilder does a decent range of elements. The 3kw ones are a bit pricey but I had no complaints when using on my old 3v system.

Although I was happy with cheap kettle elements I bought a secondhand 50ltr boiler with two elements with old-style round plugs (a 2.75kW backer and a 2.4kW lookalike). These plugs can take a lot of knocks/abuse. I prefer these now. Beware of the "swan kettle elements" on eBay as one of the reviews says it was only 1.5kW.

For 70ltr I'd get the round plug backer 2.75kW from heating element company maybe get the socket/leads and KM locknuts from eBay.

Brewpete, did you go for 3no. for more boil control? I.e. three to start and then 2 for a rolling boil?
