I guess you mean tinned extract Nial? Personaly i'd fill the water with water first, do all the steeping, then add the extract to avoid scortching. If you are refering to the sweet wort from a mash, scortching isnt an issue.

MD...A duvet would make great insulation, just make sure the missus is out when you use it :P
Hi DaaB, yeah, Iwas wondering about adding extract to the boil after the mash has finished.

Ah, bread yeast - I remember that. Early beer kits used to come with a form of bread yeast, cos it was cheap and easy to use.

Drawbacks are-

1. It doesn't smell like beer, it smells like bread

2. It's very powdery and the beer clouds up if you walk past it quickly at a distance of 20 feet. :D
