Got the citric acid the other day so, kettle element removed, I dunked it in a pint jug with 250ml of hot water and 4 tablespoons of granules. Left for 20 mins then got to work with an old toothbrush. Loads of nasty brown deposit around the edes of the element and some black gunk at the connection end. Most of it lifted with a good brush, the rest took another 1/2 hour in the jug and a scraping with a metal skewer. Broke the toothbrush handle with the effort, but now have a shiny element.

Won't leave it so long next time

... It is better to do it straight after ya brewday to, saves it getting chance to dry and cake itself on, as i say 4 teaspoons in a litre of boiling water, leave to soak for an hour or two, and a quick brushing off.

you'll see next time after the brew how easy it is once you do it regimentally, should take no longer than 5 minutes top after the soak, dry it off well and its job done :)
