Great news, look forward to seeing the build pictures (obligatory
) and seeing the christening brew (or should I say tasting it?!). Ask away with the questions, you have some of the finest of Jim's well trained engineers are at hand!

nice one matey! did you end up going for a plate HX then?
Re: 70l,70l & 50l or 100l, 100l & 70l
Not got round to it yet mate, got to rack out the garage to make space for everything before I start building so the HX is a wee while off just yet.leedsbrew wrote:nice one matey! did you end up going for a plate HX then?

100 and a 60 but yet to drill into them. Need the right ss valves first.
Re: 70l,70l & 50l or 100l, 100l & 70l
Made a start on the pots last night. I had a 3mm cobalt bit and a couple of bigger titanium bits. The cobalt ripped through in no time but stepping up took much longer han I expected. I'll get a couple of of bigger cobalt bits beore I do anymore drilling. Anyway valves are now temporarilly fitted to boiler and HLT.

Hi - they look wicked jontyr - I have just ordered some pots to start ag - i have got 2 x 70l pots and a 50l thermos - I like your conversions so far - how high did you drill the holes for the taps and what type of filters or false bottom are you using etc - I cant decide on which is the best way to go with things - I think I will make my thermos bottom draining though. Are you going for gas or electric - Sorry for all the questions, it is hard deciding which way to go

Wow Jonty! - I though you were never going to make the first cut
Have you made your mind up on the ol' gas Vs 'lecci front yet? - My bet was on you using 'lecci but I can see you being swayed by the dark side of gas
look forward to sampling the first brew

there's a heap more people with far more experience than me weo will give yougreat advice, I'm merely copying what several others have done previously. Anyway, my tap holes are 70mm from the base of each pot to the centre point of the hole - reason being the height will accommodate a cople of 90 degree solder fitting for the hop stopper. I'm going electric on the HLT and gas on the boiler (FYI beermonsta!!) I'll be having a temperature controlled HLT that I can also put on a timer (young family reduces spare time). My current boiler is electric and I personally find it a pain in the arse for cut outs due to burnt wort on the elements. False bottom will be some perforated SS sheet cut with my angle grinder, and, like you, mu mmash tun will be bottom draining. Smeone on here posted a link to a plumbing supplier with brass thru hull fittiga at a third of the price of the SS ones, when I find it, I''l post it.
Cheers and good luck, if I can loan you any drill bits etc, would be happy to do so

Finished the boiler last night with the addition of the hop filter.

It drains down to about 220ml so I'm pretty happy with that.
I'm going to be experimenting with a mesh sleeve for it so I can keep smaller particles out of the plate chiller.
