Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
I haven't a clue, it's just what the guy on the phone told me, he either said bushes or bushings. I have had a look on the net but can't seem to find any reference. I am sure fuggledog will be able to enlighten usbarney wrote:what are bushes?

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, I google image'd them, and they look like shives to me. I presume they're either called bushings or shives.

Hi
bushes are the brass fittings that recieve the keystone and shive. when i picked up mine i was told that they'd left the bushes in for me (i thought "why would you remove them"). it seems silly now, but in hindsight i should have realised that they might be removing the bushes in order to dismantle the pins (perhaps to store the staves and heads until christmas and then reassemble them - or scrap the wood?). the bushes can be used in any size cask, and i guess are some of the more expensive 'fittings' that they would want to hang onto. £20 sounds good but i think you'd need these inserts to use standard shives/keystones (although perhaps not if they come with shives - seems a bit wierd if they don't fit). do you think they'd sell you bushes in addition to a cask? sorry i didn't realise when i posted that the casks were destined for imminent 'de-bushing'! alternativly you could see if Alistair simms from wadsworth would post you the bushings if its just a case of hammering them back in (i'm out of my depth with that bit).

The guy from the visitors centre told me that I would have to get some bushings made by a metal workshop.Fuggledog wrote:Hi

Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
I'm confused about this, shouldn't you be able to get all the things you need for a cask just from a bar supplies shop?
Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
If you watch the video on their website about coopering you will see. As for the shive hole, you can still get wooden shives.
Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
Cheers, that video is really informative! I didn't realise they actually had a full time guy to make the casks, very impressive!
Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
Ben.
Can you give me dimensions of these please?
Roughly how many have they got?
Cheers

Trying to work out if I've got storage space anywhere for these ...
Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
I'm sure Barley Bottom could help you out, they do loads of cellar equipment pieces

Re: Oak pins / casks from Theakstons
sorry for the late response. These are approximately 31cm (across the head/chimbe) by 41cm.
They had a stack of about 30 or 40. Not sure what's happened to them now. best to phone them direct.
if you are interested in wooden casks you could also try the cooperage at Wadsworth (http://www.barrelsrus.co.uk/)
cheers,
ben

Forgive my ignorance but isn't all this something of a romantic idea for a domestic setting? Is it not a huge challenge to keep these things sanitary or is introducing Brett actually what you want?
