Reg, my 7 quid Wilko one was pretty flimsy to begin with but after I increased the amount of insulation between the inner and outer plastic layers it has become a lot more sturdy and the temp drop during a 90 min mast was less then 0.6C so it may well work better than you think.

Have fun adding the tap etc ;)

Mmmm...

Some initial disappointment with this purchase...

The outer layer is secured to the inner layer by three, easily-popped extrusions on the side.

This reveal a small inner air gap somewhat parsimoniously insulated with a thin sheet of expanded polystyrene.

As to the skins...

The outer skin is extremely thin and the inner skin not much better. I might be better off cutting the tap hole in the outer layer with a craft knife!

However, before I get too down, the ease of disassembly can, I think be regarded as somewaht of a bonus in some ways. The most imprtant being that I can choose to replace the thermal insulation.

My thoughts so far are a layer of aluminium foil for its reflective qualities follow by decorator's dust sheet wrapped all over for thermal insulation which would create layer after layer of trapped air.

What do we think peeps?

That's identical to mine so you should have great success.

I used one layer of aluminium foil then two layers on bubble wrap then the original polystyrene then a final layer of foil - have a link on the forum with some photos somewhere - will try and find it...

Here's one http://www.forumforfree.com/forums/inde ... 220&st=165.

Here's another http://www.forumforfree.com/forums/inde ... 1&st=0&hl= showing a graph of performance with grain inside during a proper mash.

Johnmac has one of these too and he has found it to be ok without the improvements I made but not great (I think it dropped by around 4C without the mods).

The mods only took me about 30 mins with a tube of pritt stick, ali foil, bubble wrap oh and yes, I used a sharp scalpel to cut the hole through the inner layer first then marked through with a felt pen and cut the outer hole larger for the tap to poke through - very Blue Peter like

Probably my best value for money bit of kit so far Image

i can't understand how my thin walled plastic fermenter that i use for a mash tun, can hold the temp so well(i get less than 1c drop) when you talk about 4c drop in temp inside what is supposed to be an insulated box!! maybe i have some crazy space aged plastic leaked from nasa..... maybe not, but i still dont get it.

I've got some strips of hot Cylinder tank insulation. If I got one of those Asda cool boxes and suffed the contents of one sheet between the inner and outer layer I'm guessing that should hold heat well.

Hmmm...

I have a Wilkinsons mash tun, like the one Reg has. I have insulated the lid, but not the sides. With a full load of mash, I get less than 1 degree of heat loss.

I think the lid will be under insulated on most coolbox tuns, because the "heat rises" thing is not an issue when designing a coolbox.

I think mash is sort of self insulating, in that there must be a lot of air trapped in the grain.

To answer bod, my 4 deg drop was when testing with just water - not a valid test.

DaaB, my 1 deg drop was whilst following your wise advice to wrap it in a blanket.

ah, that makes more sense then, the grain will hold a lot more heat in. having said that i do use a couple of towels and a pillow sometimes, depends how cold the ambient temp is.
