Hi

I'm after some advice to check the circuit diagram for a temperature controller that also has a relay to control 3KW HLT. (circuit diagram below)

I think I've finally got components together to make a temp controller that can be used :
a) Primarily to control heat / cool circuits of fermenting fridge
b) To control temp of 3KW HLT on brewdays

I'm a tight @rse, and I couldn't see the point of having a controller that just looked after the fridge.
I thought it would be really handy to control HLT temp for mash and sparge liquor on brew days, but then be used to control a fermenting fridge the rest of the time.

Temp controller , cheap Chinese STC-1000 (Thanks eveyone for previous help with STC-1000).
I've used this for my other fermenting fridge, and its worked fine and I'm used to the menu, so I wanted to use same again
Relay: 30A SPDT Power Relay (PwrRly30A SPDT240Vac )

Part No on relay BTA5-1ZMore info from Manufacturers site here

I've revised pics from floydmeddler & kev888 to try to create a circuit diagram for STC-1000 that used relay on heating circuit.
BTW: The STC-1000 heating circuit is only rated to 10A, fine for the fridge, but not really good enough for my 3KW, so that's why I'm using the relay.

Proposed circuit. Earth will be added of course, but is this OK?

Thanks again for help on this post and on other post

John,

That looks fine. Only comment I have is on that relay socket - you should, and I say, 'should', not must, cover the terminals, as they will be otherwise exposed, and although it is unlikely that anyone but yourself will open the container you put the arrangement in, you need to allow for someone else who is not familiar with it putting their fingers in and getting zapped.

If you make some sort of fairly rigid plastic cover for the terminals, that should suffice.

Don't take my word for the wiring, btw, get some other opinion as well. But as far as i can tell, it should all work.

Hi John,

That all looks fine to me too. I couldn't recall which pair of relay contacts was normally closed and which were normally open; i see you've swapped them over from my picture though so presumably you have checked/corrected that. Good stuff!

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for the quick replies.

TB: Its going to be a tight fit in the Maplin case I got, but I'll ensure its safe.

Kev: You're right. I've modified the diagram to show relay state when relay is off.

Looks like I've got a busy evening... :)

One thing you might want to consider is to connect those neutral wires in one place rather than using a number of different connectors - this reduces the opportunities fro wires to come loose.

Hi
I made my temperature controller with relay on Saturday and used it (successfully) on Sunday for a Spring Ale ( with Honey & Elderflower) :)

Only hitch I had was getting the relay connections right.
Connection between relay & relay block NOT intuitve. Well not to me anyway.
I needed to check online docs again from manufacturers and carefully read very faint ref letters/numbers on block.

I modified circuit diagram to include relay connections. (Excludes earth for mains & plug sockets)

NB The relay wiring is just for relay I used (BTA5-1Z)

I made a template for plug socket holes

I needed to cut off side fixing lugs from relay socket to get it to fit in

Good Stuff John, looks very smart - glad its come together nicely!

And thanks for taking the time to update your circuit with the relay's socket labels (foolishly, I just bunged mine together and didn't think to make any notes for people) =D>

Cheers Kev

I couldn't have made my temp controller without your help and help of many others on this forum.
Hopefully my post may help others in turn

Very happy to use if for last weekends brew (3KW HLT temp).
Its now looking after fermentation fridge #2 (Spring Ale with elderflower and honey).

Indeed it as helped out others John, i was at a total loss as to which terminals on the contactor block to wire to, so a massive Thank you for your diagram, i can now get my temp controller wired up properly =D>

Hi haz66

Glad circuit diagram is useful. Good luck with your temp controller build.

BTW: If you need any other bits and pieces, I notice that Maplins are offering free delivery at the moment so a good time to get any components you need. :)

Well thanks to this topic i`ve now wired up my controller with relay and it works perfectly, so thanks to both Kev and jmc =D>
I wouldn`t have had a clue how to wire the relay up, so Thanks guys

Glad it worked out well!
Interesting how things come around; my tanks and so on were something you inspired me to with your previous build - JBK working at its best! :-)

+1 to Kev's comments.
No way I could have got my setup without the help of so many from Jims.

Glad your controller worrking well.
I find mine a great help on brewdays.

If anyone has been reading this thread and thinking of doing something like it, please take note that I have just added a second qualifier ('EDIT2") to the end of my previous post here.

Maybe, if the manufacturers of the ATC800 got enough requests, they'd make an ATC80++ with a 20A capacity on the heat relay side [currently 10A] as well as the cooling relay [currently 20A]...

Or is there a way of switching the relays around?...
