Another couple of hours spent on the project, one inch thick WBP cut into the two circular bases, then both veneered with quater cut oak (both sides), not long now until glueing day. :D

Hi barneey, looking very neat , just a quick recomendation if your interested in a coating for the oak , I use Bona Mega in a satin finish a hell of a lot , its intended as a floor varnish so its tough as hell , easy to apply , and according to whoever my workmate spoke to in Sweden food safe ( God I hope so we've stuck it on a lot of worktops [-o< ) Its expensive but its good stuff.

Thanks for the suggestion of Bona Mega, never used the product before, thought I might try it, googled it and saw the price  .

For the time being, I think I`ll stick to the Danish I already have in the shed.

Cheers for the thought.

I wished you hadnt asked that question, but so far for each barrel theres 24 pieces + 8 lid pieces so 64 pieces total @ 600mm long = 38m @ a rough cost of £10.00 / m = £380.00 + ply sheet / veneer say £100.00, copper sheet and rivets £70.00, sundries £50.00 Grand eye watering total of £600/ 2 = £300.00 each + pots etc.

Just depressed myself now.

Just cheered myself up again and spent the morning glueing the parts together (only one pot), apart from the inevitable cleaning up after the glues gone off everything went well, would have been alot easier with an extra pair of hands though.

Now to get started on the lid. #-o

As per my first post I took most of my inspiration from this post.

I have now glued up my lid ready for cutting and finishing on the lathe. Image

I cant quite make my mind up whether to have the lid flush fitting with the sides of the barrel (as polymoog) or to leave it overs sized to create a lip? Anyone any ideas what would suit it better??

My other aim with the lid, if theres enough timber thickness to do it was to recess the stainless lid into the wooden lid. The timber lid top being finished on top with a dome of copper or the like.

Cheers for any suggestions regarding the lid.

I'd have a lip personally then put some hand grips in it, as opposed to attaching a handle or something like that. It going to look sick regardless of what you do though!

Looking good there Barneey! I took was inspired by Polymoog's post when he posted, really must get round to doing it at some point! It helps that I have access to a CNC worktable, I've just got round to making an Ash mash paddle (inspired by Scooby and spurred on to get it done by Spud) 10 mins in AutoCAD, 5 mins on the CNC and 30 mins sanding!

For my money I'd have the lid flush.

Cheers,
Jamie

More progress I see!

I seem to recall that in at least one of his vessels polymoog had a sort of wide rim formed by his wooden top, with a removable metal lid fitting a hole inside the rim. I think if it were me I'd go with a flush lid in that kind of setup, where the wooden top is fixed to the sides, but I'd go with a lip if the wooden top itself were the lid and just placed on - mainly because I wouldn't trust myself to make a barrel precisely enough, so the lip could hide some inaccuracy without having to place the lid on just so.

Cheers

I`ve cut the lid this morning on the bandsaw, only to find out that I cut the bl**dy thing too small (a few too many last night, me thinks), I`ve persevered with the lid tho as a training exercise + want to see if it fitted on the lathe.

I might get over the problem by getting some more oak slats and making a new lid, failing that I might see if I can flatten some copper tube and make a band for the lid as well.

I`m currently given the whole thing a coat of danish to see what it will look like.

Photos later..

Just given the thing one coat of danish + am now playing around with the copper bands.

or was playing around with a piece of copper for a dome top

I`m going to have to fit the pot etc next on the list of things to do.

BTW I dont know if I have room for another pot on this scale, things are getting a little busy in the brewery room, so if anyones interested in buying some oak slats already planned at 7.5 degrees + a bottom let me know.
