wouldnt the volumetric flow rate be the same, only the speed which would change? larger hole = less speed, at least that was my interpretation of this counterflow business.

+ a link to the problems I had viewtopic.php?f=6&t=49810&hilit=plate
Thanks barneey,
After you said that, I went back and looked at the diagram and had convinced myself it was all arse over tit. i.e. small in, large out  . Think I'm seeing sense now. Wort in the large and cooling water in the small, going in opposite directions.

As for the filter,
After cleaning it out the flow though the pick up isn't great. Its 3/8" just now, I'll see how it behaves with a pump but will probably to up it to 1/2". The 3/8" inlet gives it quite a flow for recircing.

For anyone else's info, on the German 30 plate 125Kw chiller the large connections are 1" BSP. Need to get some stainless as I'm not happy putting them though the galvanised fittings I had for the water.

Thanks darkonnis, Its been fun.
I'm going to go bow to the German diagram and their better knowledge. Like many things in life, I'm not going to pretend to understand why, I’m just going to do.

Yes, it does seem that there is a set way to do this. I'm going to find out why however! I'll report back when I have an answer (even if its "I don't know")

Right, this is off a very kind consultant who has taken the time to get back to me with regards to this heat exchanger business:
The heat exchanger situation is basically as you’ve stated. The contact area is the same between the two liquids, the overall heat transfer coefficient should be the same so a counter current vs co-current may be the only possibility. However, if you are getting additional cooling from the air (losses if you like) then putting the hotter liquid on the outside would incur better cooling then putting the cold liquid on the outside (if you see what I mean, and again, this would only be the case if you had the plates set up such that the hot liquid was on the outside at both ends).

Thanks for the info.

I did my first brew today and all went well. No real disaster's just quite a few learning.
The plate chiler worked well. Had to run the pump full speed to hit 19C. The hose tap was to far away to slow it down.

The hop filter worked really well. Was able to circ for 30 mins no slow down. The only issue was the hopback, as i was pumping so fast it drove the filter up and crumpled the top of it. Still didn't let any hops through though (the design allows it to float) :D will need to strengthen the mesh some how.

On the list of things to do (when the tct cutter turns up)

-Fit sparge arm to Thermo pot lid.
-Fit sight glass and thermometer to Thermopot.

Try not to buy more corny's or anything else shiny

Looking very smart mate, one piece of advice I wish someone had given me.....

Get the system up and running to the best of its ability before buying anymore new shiney stuff, otherwise youll be on a constant learning curve :)

Yer It was quite a learning curve. Its funny how i'd managed to get my last system down to a fine art, They was plenty to keep on top of. It probably didn't help that I was still building a couple of bits during the brew.

Not planning anything else for a while, other than brewing. (Still got a few mods to do to the mash tun though)

Once I get used to brewing with this setup the only upgrade I'm thinking about is a herms/rims system base on the willis system.
Will probably need another corny

Tell me about it.

It's just fitting the sparge arm to the lid, the thermometer and sight glass. Allows me to sparge with the lid on and not lose to much heat. After the mess I made with a hole cutter I'm waiting for the tct cutter.

Hows the electric brewery coming on?

I've got a couple of those on order (can't see how they can make any profit at £2.50 with free delivery from HK), but I don't think I've got enough room in the box for them. Will need to give it some thought.

Thats the good and bad thing about items from HK, Good price V having to wait for ages for them to arrive. As for the size, on the ones I bought they do state an "open pore size: 45m X 27mm" size but rather than trust this info I thought I would wait untlii they arrive and I know they are going to work first, dont want 4 rectanglar holes in my shiney. + not too sure how "45m" will fit in!!!!! :)

I have also resisted the urge of thinkin I need a hop back after reading through your build again :)

You say resisted, I prefer the term "accepted you'll get one at some point :)"

So whats with the electric brewery then, is that just rolling everything up neatly into a single control panel? (I made that sound much easier/simpler than the reality no doubt)
