cornie kegs
I spoke with a company who rent out kegs/bottles for parties. They don't sell gas as they rent their bottles off BOC. They could supply the bottle for 20 euro (about 13.50 sterling) and 6 euro per month rental.
If I can get an empty bottle (he suggested trying to get an empty from a pub) they won't charge any rental as they can exchange it when it needs to be refilled. This obviously sounds like a good option but obviously BOC will only fill their own bottles.
These guys use the same bottles ast the pubs; I think he called them 'V Type' but they're hip height which doesn't sound like it will fit in my fridge

I been asking around at buying a small (5L) gas bottle (about 1' tall & would fit inside my kegerator a treat). Guy at the hire centre said they could get me one for about £85 but they hire them for £18 filled and there is no monthly rental charge. The local "Pubgas" company said they would not sell me one because
- by law they need safety testing every 5 years and the gas filling company is instructed by law to confiscate any "unsafe" gas bottles.
Think I'll hire the small one from the hire centre and neglect to tell them that I'll be keeping it for over a year
Matt
P.S. The 10L co2 bottles are good for >1000 pints

If you look on the neck of the gas bottles, there's a small plastic ring with the date the next pressure test is due. Usually this is several years away. Mine says Re-test in 2014.
A mate of mine gave me a 14lb CO2 pub gas bottle a few months back, with a Re-test date of 1995. No gas company I contacted would touch it. So I gave it back to my mate as a large Doorstop.
So I guess the moral is, if you locate a bottle freemans, make sure it's still within pressure Re-test date.

OK, making some progress!! A mate of mine asked his local pub if they had any old CO2 bottles left - they had one out the back; it still has gas in it. Might make do with this and worry about the refill when the time comes.
He sent me photos and here's what it looks like (won't let me include them in the message so I've given links)

It has an open/shut tap on top marked 'Distillers CO2'. Looks like it might be small enough to fit in my fridge too - the third photo shows the connection - Norman has offered me a regulator with a male fitting - are these regulators standard and if so should Norman's one fit my gas bottle?
I've never seen a pub gas bottle before so apologies for the dumbo questions - is there anything else I need to connect up my gas to the keg?

Alexander - did you have any luck sourcing gas? I'm not too sure where to look for willing suppliers. I'm in Dublin but I don't mind looking elsewhere to get set up.
Hi Niall
Air Products said no problem but they wanted 28 euro for a fill and 29 cent a day rental on the gas bottle and the agent i contacted refused to fill any but his own bottles which means if i go down that road it's around 100 euro a year rental!!! maybe if you contact a different agent you'll get a different answer. Good luck and keep me posted if you get a better result than me
thanks, Kevin

Norm said the same thing (C02 bottles being standard) - when he looked at a photo of the fitting on mine he thought it was either that a regulator broke off in which case he suggested I remove it with a pliers (!) or it was a really old style bottle, in which case I'm back to square one.
I haven't figured out how to embed a photo in a message - can you guys look at this link and tell me if the fitting looks right?

Matt
Hey Frothy, are you from Rushden? I spent most of my childhood in Wellingborough, down the road from Rushden.
I was born in Wellingborough and lived in Rushden until I went to Uni.
Small world innit.
