That's his boiler Garwatts. I like the use of those small elements too. Definitely easier to fit tiny holes in a stainless keg than to fit 40/60mm.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

What is the SS screen sold as in Ikea? Is it in the cooking section??

Cheers
Chris

Cheers, that clears up a bit of confusion. I haven't seen an element like that before. It looks quite neat.

Is the SS screen strong enough to hold the weight of the grain or did you have to modify it, if you have a pic of the construction that would be great.

i currently use a plastic plate in my SS keg but i like the look of the screen and it should reduce the particles in the wort, (not built my HERMs yet)

www.heatingelementcompany.co.uk has those smaller dimension water elements. They should do the job nicely at 3kw of power.

This sounds wrong, I have a round bottom, in my MT but I am sure if you placed the mesh on a plate , ring off copper or other it would be more than strong enough.

I have a round bottom aswell, I am using a SS keg like you and was looking to remove the plate and just use the mesh which is why I was wondering if it was strong enough for the weight of the grains and water,

Its early days with the IKEA mesh but the £1 Iron mesh splatter mesh' stood up to a 6.5kg of grain plus water, I think that when (if) you try it, and as long as your tank fitting has two "dogs" I think thats what they are called, you should be ok.
But at under £3 its a bargain, or use the plate method!
I am going to make a second mesh and use it in the Copper so I can use loose hops as I feel that now I am using electric I will burn my hop bags.

more pics to come

and IYI,

My 1st brew with the RIMS machine ( name to be decided)
is looking and smelling mighty fine.

Hi Gary, where did you get this plate?

I've tried the splatter guard in my copper but it rides up during the boil allowing hops into the tap so am planning to use this idea?

Excellent set up; tinkering a plenty! :)
