I nearly tried it, but experiments showed that my tanks leaked too much around the lids. At the time i asked a similar question here and here

I have however reduced the amount of PBW needed to passively fill and soak the FV, by filling smaller screw-top vessels (gallon plastic water bottles or for bigger tanks one of those square-ish plastic jerry can/barrel things) with plain hot water and putting them inside the FV to reduce the volume of PBW solution needed. Its a bit more work and you have to take care not to scratch the FV or use anything thats going to be awkwardly heavy, though.

Cheers

The new Morebeer Conical has arrived today, so thought I would post a few piccies of the thing.

Firstly the welding is great, no internal areas of concern. Secondly the conical is made from thick stainless sheet, from one piece not several welded together.

The triclover fittings are a joy to use, so overall am very happy with the conical.

It willl be another classic pale ale with just Amerillo hops.

Will either wait until the new thermowell turns up or may just use the old one I have.

Only thing really stopping me is the amount of equipment stock pile, waiting to be posted is making moving around difficult ;)

Hi Clive, looking nice, how much wort can you fit in there and how are you controlling temps?

Very good quality piece of kit you have there.

I don't wish to sound rude but from I can see of the welds around the outlets they need a fair bit of tidying up compared with commercial brewery vessels that I have seen. They don't look to have been ground smooth and then polished, unless it is the photos that don't show them in their best light.

What stops the conical falling through the stand ? There seems to be some clearance between the outer ring and the conical does the conical have some lugs welded to it ?

I dont see the point in grinding and polishing tig welds, all thats required on a good weld is some pickling paste and a scrub with some scotch brite. There's absolutely nowhere to harbour germs on a sound weld and the only thing to gain by polishing them is asthetics (i've been tig welding for 13 years).

In fact i prefer to see welds untouched, this lets you know the person working on the item was a craftsman. Some people try to cover up a multitude of sins by grinding back their welds.

Deller, there are 3 little triangles welded to the inside of the stand from what I saw. They match the angle of the cone and stop it being a victim of gravity :D (Though I may stand corrected yet)

Dave, those welds look fine to me, you get problems when you have nooks and crannies that germs can hide under. As there are non, I wouldn't be worried in the slightest. Also what fermenters are you talking about when you say commercial ones? I've seen some square and some circular which looks just fine, but I can't imagine the conicals being THAT much better? At the very worst, these welds are more than adequate than whats likely required of em.
