Lidl Boiler
Re: Lidl Boiler
I really want to get this boiler as a cheap step for me into all grain, but still not sure if I should skimp on the boiler. It's about time I made the step up really hrmmm.
Re: Lidl Boiler
Nice one Koomber!
That pipe in the side, is that for adding liquid, or is it connected to you hop filter to syphon out? (or something completely different?)
Also, I pm'd you about a stock pot suplier, as newbies aren't allowed to post commercial links. Dunno if it worked though.
Aceface57, I started using this for my 1st full grain. Before that I was only doing tinned kits. All went without a problem and reached hot break when expected.
The modification is really easy, as long as you've got tools that'll let you turn the collar.
Two butter-knives took the dial off without marking any of the surfaces.
I have thin-nosed pliers, but they were too big to fit in the notches on the collar (they're very small, about 1-2mm if I remember correctly).
I had a set of allen keys from a pound shop. The two smallest ones fitted in the gap (if you're a guitarist, the size you would use to adjust the bridge and one size up from that). I clamped them onto the main pin sticking out the collar (after turning it to the centre, so it would have room to turn) using a pair of locking pliers (also from the pound shop) then gave it a 45 degree turn anti-clockwise.
If your going to use this for mashing, you need to keep an eye on the temperature and switch it on/off manually, as the temperature drops quite a few degrees before kicking in after it's cut off.

Re: Lidl Boiler
The pipe at the side is the cooling coil. I put it in at 15 minutes to make it sanitary. As this was the first use I gave all copper components a wash is some citric acid to remove any tarnish as otherwise it winds up in the beer. Just going to pop off and have a look at the link

Re: Lidl Boiler
Cheers, was lucky enough to win this, sorry Chunk if you were after it.
Hopefully the mod should work and I can get going and do some BIAB with it.

Re: Lidl Boiler
Does anyone have a video of doing the mod and turning the collar?
A bit confused by what to do exactly.

Re: Lidl Boiler
dwhyte, I believe it is is the collar just behind the spindle. I haven't managed to turn it myself as I don't have any needle-nose pliers small enough. I tried using a pair of screwdrivers to tun the collar but had no joy. I am going to invest in a good pair of needle-nose pliers. I would also appreciate it if anyone has a video, more pics or can confirm how much pressure is needed to turn the collar.
Re: Lidl Boiler
The collar can be an absolute pig to turn. The thread locking compoound has a hell of a grip. I had to completely remove mine and grap it with a pair of full size plyers (I got the electrician at my work o help out since I managed to dislodge some of the wires in my attempt).dan_r_901 wrote:dwhyte, I believe it is is the collar just behind the spindle. You might want to try using a hairdryer to GENTLY heat the thread locking compound. This might make it easier to shift, but that is just a guess.
But I can guarantee you, the collar can be an utter PITA to turn.
Re: Lidl Boiler
It was Ball ache to turn the collar!
I managed to lodge my long nose pliers into the collars ....made a bit of a mess of the surrounding plastic(and the collars)......excessive force is required!

OK, OK!!
As it was my idea, I am now feeling guilty that you boys are having problems!
I just went out to the garage (bbrrrr...) and bodged this out of an old chisel:

I have two Lidl's which I had not needed to adjust because they were ok for the HLT and Mash tun.
They were both a piece of p1ss with this.
HOWEVER, they did not seem to have vast amounts of locking compound on them, so it might not be a cure-all
If anyone wants to borrow it, PM me your address

Re: Lidl Boiler
These are now £29.99 in diddle-de-dee in Reading.
Mine also cut out at around 94â—¦C but after doing befuggled's modification (I just angled a small screwdriver up against the top slot and tapped it around with a few moderate blows from a pin hammer) it now gives a nice rolling boil.
Now to fashion a hop strainer and maybe upgrade the tap.......

Re: Lidl Boiler
Let us know how you get on making a hop strainer (with pictures
)
Tap looks all right to me but are you meaning upgrade it to a metal tap?
