sorry if this subject was put to bed in the old forum but did we ever decide which was the most suitable thermometer to use for the boiler/ mash tun,taking into account it being immersed in liquid?as i remember a few went t**'s up. :?

I use one of these aquarium thermometers from thermometers4u for mash temperatures and also monitoring fermentation temps. It works well for me. It has an upper limit of 70C so might not be any use for you if you want to measure say sparge temp etc...

I just use one of those long thin spirit thermometers (most home brew shops sell them).

I tie a bit of string to the end of the thermometer and the other end to the handle of the boiler.

I have an accurate mercury thermometer and I've calibrated both my spirit thermometers against it and produced calibration curves. 8)

I've found they're both fairly accurate at mashing temperature, but one reads about 2C high at 20C.

That looks like the one for me Andy especially as it comes with a decent probe length,just hope now i can find one on ebay.
