Scales

Post by Garth » Fri Oct 20, 2006 8:13 pm

Nearly got all my gear ready for my first AG brew sometime next week and just realised I don't have anything to accurately weigh hops and smaller amounts of grain. Got some crappy kitchen scales which would do for the pale, but need something a bit more sensitive for smaller amounts. So, all you grain brewers out there, what do you use and how good does it do the job?

I am a bit of a cook as well so I have fairly decent kitchen scales.
Mine have a digital readout and allow any container to be put on them, the scales zero'd, and then weigh the goods. I think they were about twenty quid, which is a bit much for just brewing use, but I like them.

I use some fairly cheepo kitchen scales too. They have a resolution of 2gm and are just about ok.

I use these

They are very good, better than the Salter digital that they replaced, which cost more 8)

I have a set of scale as described by TheBigEasy. For accurately weighing small amounts I have these;

There is a wide choice aimed mainly for special dietray needs.

I've used a set of these for ages, although mine aren't as cool looking as they're grey not chrome! :roll:

Check ebay, I got some digital scales secondhand for about a fiver I think. :wink:

Will improve your cake-making abilities as well 8)

I don't have a problem with the scales, so I'm not in the market for digital ones. My baking and brewing haven't suffered from it, to the best of my knowledge.

Aha, but you have swanky scales using weights 8) (my remarks about getting digital scales were not in response to your scales - I hadn't seen your post); the scales I had before were a useless supermarket jobby, so measuring hops was not possible to do accurately. I'm sure that you could measure accurately with yours.

Thanks guys for the good informative responses, guess it's a digi set that I'll try, mainly for the ease of use.

Guess I am being a bit relaxed but I use the wifes kitchen scales which to be honest are not that accurate.

I guess the accuracy of scales depends on how important it is to you to get the exact weight.

Having seen Seveneer brew today I can confirm that excellent ales can be brewed without the need for scales! :D
