Demi jons

Post by randomdave » Fri Nov 28, 2008 10:26 am

Not sure if this is the right section to post this query in, so feel free to move it :D

I have just aquired for free 2 demi jons (not sure on capacity cos ive not measured yet and not sure if they just come in a standard size)

Normally i kit brew but im eager to do something with the demijons. So the newbie question is, what can i do with em?

Any advice is appreciated.

Turbo Cider is about the easiest alcoholic drink you can do:

1. Clean and sterilise the demijohn
2. Boil 200g sugar in 500ish ml apple juice.
3. Pour this into demijohn
4. Top up with more apple juice (use 4L in total)
5. Pour in half a sachet of cider/champagne yeast
6. Fit airlock if you have one

Thats it!

I have two very simple wines on the go in my Demi's, the simpleist is merely pure blueberry grape juice from tesco, yeast, sugar and yeast vit, bubbling away happily now.

Let us know how you get on mate

Tesco do a gorgeous 100% pure red grape and (my next wine) an Bluberry juice which me and SHMBO loved. At the moment I mixed the red grape with the Blue at 4/1 ratio but plan a pure mix next time.

What sort of time scale will i be looking at for one of these simple wines?
fermentation in the demijon times and how long till its ready to drink? I cleared it with swmbo and she was quite optimistic. Im gunna go for a simple wine in one and a turbo cider i reckon, probably a fruity one an see if i can create something like jaques cider cos i know she will drink that

Turbo cider goes really dry - it will ferment literally all the sugar in the juice. If you want something sweet like jaques you may need to add sweetener once its fermented

I dont mind how it turns out tbh. I like trial an error, if i get it wrong the first time it means i have to keep trying which results in more to drink :P

It might or might not help, but i've been reading bits on this page and have some Ginger Beer on the go in a Demi at the moment which was started from a Ginger Beer plant in a Jam jar (the resultant Jam jar juice has been mixed with more sugar, water and 4 lemons worth of juice and is at present bottle conditioning in plastic 2 liter coke bottles, building up some right old pressure!)

I'm probably going to try some random fruit juice wines next in another demi :)
