Beer line sizes

Post by Doingatun » Sun Oct 29, 2006 6:23 pm

Hi – can anyone help me, I’m wanting to plumb up a second hand fridge I managed to get so I can dispense from a couple of chilled corny’s via 2m or so beer line through a wall to a couple of taps wall mounted in the kitchen :D .
Norman supplied me a while ago with the corny's and all 3/8'' hose barb disconnects, 3/8'' tubing and 2 shinny flow control taps also with 3/8’’ hose barb fitting. Having a preference for lagers at the mo and before drilling holes will 3/8’’ be ok with forced carb lagers or do I need 3/16’’ beer line and fittings?

Since you're brewing lagers, you might prefer more carbonation. In that case, I'd say the 3/16 will be better as it allows you to have a higher pressure in the keg without it gushing out of the tap - the 3/16 tubing drops more pressure along the length of pipe.
I've recently changed to 3/16 myself and found that I don't have to reduce the keg pressure when serving now.

The disconnects I had were fitted with a barb style connection however it was possible to unscrew most of them and then I replaced the barbs with 3/8 John Guest push fittings. I then fitted 3/8 to 3/16 reducers into these and fitted the same reducers to my taps - then used 3/16 line.

I got my John Guest parts from Norm too - he can supply most things but you need to send him an email detailing what you need and what you intend to do and he is pretty good at helping out.

Thanks EB & Daab - is it possible to get 3/16 line connected to 3/8'' tap hose barb elbow that screws on with a large nut.

Just to be awkward would 3/16 be ok for serving other ales/beers I may wish to brew in the future?

Thanks Daab - is the Co2 feed line ok at being left at 3/8''.

Converting hose barb disconnects to push-fix what female adapter BSP thread size will I need to screw on the disconnect?

I use about 6 feet of 3/16 line for my lagers.

I think the only reason bar taps use the 3/16" hoses is to allow them to fit multiple pipes into 1 font i.e. we have some T-bars at work that take 6 taps. If you can stick to 3/8" I would.

Interesting - you learn something new every day.

For JG's you could try the harmony hut

Yes, that's my reasoning too and also that there is less in the pipes to go stale between sessions.
