Refractometer

Post by Mr blue » Mon Nov 20, 2006 10:59 pm

Bought one of these of Ebay, after checking my spitfire brew and getting a reading of 5.8 and using the tool in beersmith to convert it which said it was 1022 which its been for the last two days thinking I had a stuck fermentation was going to give it a stir and then some more yeast if that didn't work but first decide to get my hydrometer out just to double check put it in got a reading 1014 which is spot on for final gravity for the recipe. Has anyone else use one, the main reason I got one was to check my run off when sparging as when I use the trial jar the hydrometer sticks to the side of the jar giving a false reading :? would using a glass trial jar make a deference :?:

Hi Mr Blue,

Beware your reading! I'm sure someone will be along soon to explain this but the refractometers reading can only be taken as true for unfermented wort.

A correction factor has to be applied when fermenting.

Somebody :?:

OK, I've got a refractometer.

Two points.

1. Have you calibrated it as per the instructions ?
2. I put your reading into Beersmith and I think you've using the wrong Beersmith option. You need to select "Fermenting Wort Gravity" in th calculation dropdown box, enter 5.8 into the Refractometer Reading field and then the original OG before fermentation started (you did measure this I hope 8) ) into the Original Gravity field. It will then give you the gravity reading. The reason for this is that the calculation for fermenting wort needs to take into account the alcohol content which changes the refraction gubbins.

Thanks guys, as you've probably guessed I'd had unfermented wort on the drop down menu  now done the right option reading 1011 :) . At least I now know I did'nt buy a dud one and that the reading I took with it at the beginning was true. :D
