The frothy mash tun

Post by Frothy » Tue Sep 19, 2006 8:14 pm

I set out as per DAAB specification (thanks Daab) but then found a 22mm - 3/4" threaded adapter and so the cross piece had to be sacrificed as I only bought 2 22mm t-pieces. The tap is a water butt tap from Ebay and a hoselock quick connect clips straight on the end.

Sparger (of the non spinny variety) - to be placed through hole in tun lid. Made from 15mm pipe with the idea of warming some 1/2" hose to push over the top end, a jubilee clip too should stop it sliding in to the tun.

Took <1hr after I got all the bits. Thanks for the pics etc guys... I just copied other stuff I've seen on here (apart from the sparger - that was me.) finally decided to take the plunge after steeping some crystal malt and realising all grain might not be so scary after all.

Looks good Matt. When you going to put it into action?

All looking good. I like the home-made spinny sparger. I guess that you have tested it out? From the photo it does look slightly longer than the width of the lid which could cause problems. (I assume that it is just the perspective of the pic)

I get the feeling it's not supposed to spin 8)

That would probably explain why it doesn't look like it would spin :D

Thanks guys. Ok Daab I see what you mean and I'll take an inch or so from the longer arms. Andy - yes it is filthy :)

Hopefully just one more extract brew with some bits and bobs I've got left. First all grain should be something like Jim's recipe I think, a straight-forward bitter using some pale malt and some crystal with possibly some Northern Brewer and Goldings. It's all about to get interesting.

How much wort is it possible to get from a mash tun this size?

If it's a 28L coolbox then you should manage to get 10Kg of grain mashed in there (would be a thick mash though) which is enough for a 10 gallon batch 8)

I'm not convinced you can mash so much in a mash tun that big. I reckon you'll get stuck mashes due to the mash being too thick and no headroom for the sparge arm.

Yes, I know, I'm all doom and gloom.....

It's all about fitting it in the corny kegs - if I could do 40L that would be ace as that would fit my boil kettle nicely. Will see how it goes :) efficiency permitting.
