Milling

Post by tim » Fri Dec 15, 2006 11:35 pm

Just got a 25k bag of grain from H&G and now realise I ordered it whole not crushed! Its what goes of ordering late at night after sampling a particualrly good IPA :P
Any suggestions for an improvised mill? What about putting it for a quick wizz in a food processor?

but seriously...

food processor will be no good as it will cut/destroy the grains rather than crush them - you don't want to end up with a load of flour.

Have you got a friendly home brew shop who could mill the grains if you promise to throw all your future custom their way ? 8)

A rolling pin but only for a kilo, wouldn't fancy a full bag!

 Rats - guess I'm gonna have to see how many people want to get me a christmas present ... any suggestions for a reasonably priced mill?

How many brewers do you know. It's an ideal thing to share! You'd only need it maybe once a month.

I've met a guy who uses a food processor to grind up his malt; I've also tried his beers which were good. He obviously stops before it turns into flour. Perhaps worth a try on a small amount of malt if other options fall through?

Thanks for the pointers guys. Have an old coffee grinder I used to use for spices with an adjustable grinding mechanism. After a bit of trial and error got it to the right setting (about 3/4 open), unscrewed the handle and attached an electric drill and it works fine - OK for a backup anyway.

Back in business so lets get on with that mash ..... :D

I've emailed them. I'm in for one if it is. I'll make an hopper.

I'm hoping to get 25kg of unmilled for £10 instead of milled at £25.

Sounds like a bargain Andy. Be interesting to see if they honour it. :D

Hmm 93p for a grain mill seems apealing...

Unless that 93p deal comes through  I've found that the Uk retailers take a huge liberty with the prices of malt mills. If you contact the Barley Crusher guys they will ship you the complete mill with a 15lb hopper for $194 airmail. Obviously with the smaller hopper or surface mail it's cheaper ($154). That's the inclusive price....but without UK VAT.
