metal hop strainers and heating elements?

Post by prolix » Sat Dec 23, 2006 11:07 pm

Anyone here got a copper tube hop strainer that touches their heating element? Just I picked up an electrum boiler and it has no clearance for a 22mm strainer under it, it will be touching. Anyone got one of these and what do you do? Will it short the thing (thought they were insulted from water as it is a conductor but do not want to try that particular experiment) or could I rotate it 180 so there was more clearance if possible?
Ideas welcome cheers

In the Bruheat boiler you just turn the element through 180 degrees. It then clears the hop strainer.Could work with electrim.

thanks guys. I was just reading about Daabs plate with the holes in, could that be used as a hop strainer or would it get stuck.

Well I am not allowed on the computer or in the garage to potter untill after Christmas so I'll just drink my Wherry and my mead and worry about it next week.

Thanks again and cheers

Yes.

Probably not. I used a similar perforated plate at the bottom of a fermenting bin for years as a mash tun, then as a hop strainer ( hop back) after the boil. No problems with it apart from one..... the one time I made up the mash and was about to batten down the hatches for the 1.5 rest when I realised I'd forgotten to put the plate (false bottom) in first...... only did that the once.
