Has anyone ever tried to change the tap on one of the 'budget' barrels (the ones with the 2" lid)
I'm getting pretty fed up with the standard lever tap on my barrel and wonder about replacing it with one of the barrel types. The tap doesn't appear to have a backnut, so I'm assuming that it just screws into the barrel.
I don't fancy destroying the barrel if it's not that way though!

Hmm, hadn't thought of that - thanks for the tip!

I've just purchased a new(ish) 5 gallon barrel from e-bay. It has a 4" lid which I am going to replace with a King Keg lid. It also has a drum tap, but I have a new one which I hoped to install, however, I don't seem to be able to get my arm into the barrel all the way. Any ideas?
Sorry for hijacking the thread.

My barrel doesn't appear to have a back nut, so there's no need to get my arm in - good job, given that the lid's only 2 inches
The only thing I can think of is to use a tap spanner like one of these:
I suspect that even with one of those it'll be horribly fiddly...

There's probably only a small percentage of the male population over 16 that can get their arms in one of those kegs,
And luckily, I am 1 of those, I can also just squeeze my arm past my elbow a Corny keg too.
1 day I'm probably going to face a trip to A&E to get a Corny removed from my arm I fear though...

Me too, I can even scrub the bottom with a sponge....Too many years cycling giving me strong but scrawny arms

I don't know about a corny, but I can get my arm right into a 4" pressure barrel. Life must be tricky for those that can't!

I'm not the smallest of people but with a wet arm and a bit of pushing and twisting, I can just about get my arm far enough into a 4" boots type barrel to turn the nut. Although the last time I had to get the wife to pull the barrel of my arm!
