A work colleague is expressing interest in brewing up a kit so I'm taking him off the to LHBS this week to get some equipment together. He's not interested in bottling so it's keg time. What do you guys recommend as a reasonably priced keg ? I've used KingKeg before cornies and they were OK but I didn't like the float system (I had one of the high tap kegs). I also see reports of quality probs with the current "batch" of KingKegs....
So....a reasonably priced keg which you can screw a HB CO2 cylinder into and can also get your hand in for cleaning.... ??

Dont know if you would consider it reasonably priced but daab recommended the KK bottom tap and has been a fine purchase

I would also go with King Keg (Bottom Tap). Got mine for £33 from my supplier at Blackheath Market, I'm chuffed with it too.

I use those for wine. They'd do for emergency brews if my carboys are full but I't only ever acase of a wait for 5-10 days for one to come free.
Yes the do have Woodfordes. (£14.99 I think) The others are just plain nasty. Gordies, at arounf £7

i used the wilkos ones with little problem, although its only a 2 inch cap which is a bit of a pain, but i just shake it a lot when the fluids in, good exercise really.

With the 2" cap barrels, you could buy a demijohn brush. Basically this is angled so it will reach some of the tricky areas. While it doesn't do a perfect job at cleaning, it helps the process along.
I use my brush along with soda crystals. Never had a problem yet...

I had four basic barrels in rotation before I got my cornie set-up.
A good blast with the hose and bit of a scrub with a demijohn bush got most of the crud out, while a soak in PBW or washing powder would remove anything stubborn.
They served me well until the cornies took over.

What's wrong with the King Keg with the top-tap?

1. The float thing is rubbish
2. Quality of recent KK batches is apparently very poor, so much so that some shops are refusing to sell them.
I used them during 1996-2005 BC* and yup, I could serve beer. but I don't miss 'em now I'm a cornie user

You can buy a corny for the same price.
Nothing apart from the price.
Why not use a cheaper one with a float attached.

I think the KK TT are fine. i have had no problems with the float and when i learnt not to over tighten the lid i have had no leak probs. having the tap at the top means you can keep the keg on the floor
knowing what i know now though i would not get them again as they are quite expensive. i would go cypher keg/cask/polypin. i pretty much only use my KK for clearing now and use polypin for dispence
