Handpull Sparklers

Post by Jim » Tue Jan 23, 2007 1:15 pm

Are these things all a standard fitting, or do they vary depending on the handpull manufacturer?

I believe them to be standard

i purchased 2 black sparklers from here jim and they fit my angram co pump perfect.

I think frothy is correct, i think that it is a standard size throughout all pumps.

Ill have to post up some picks of my handpull setup. Hows yours goin jim? Cask ale on tap in your own home is amazing :) and the novelty of pulling yourself a pint through a handpump never wears off.

Thanks for that, chaps.

I emailed a1barstuff and they tell me their sparklers will fit my pump, so they must all be standard.

Another question; is 3/8" the right size for the beer line? There was a stub of tubing on the pump that seems to be about that size, but it's stretched to about 1/2" where it went onto the pump. A1 have both sizes, but only the 3/8" is reinforced.

My set up is still work in progress - I'm sourcing the sparkler, beer line and drip tray (and possible some food grade o rings to replace the ordinary ones I bought at a hobby shop). After that, I need to link it up to a placci barrel into which I'll put the amount of beer I need for a particular session. I'll probably only use it when I have guest drinkers round - it doesn't seem worth connecting it all up just to pull off a couple of pints.

I think it's meant to be 1/2" ID. These 3/8" - 1/2" stem adapters are great to stick in a corny connect.

Jim, i would advise you to get a 5litre polypin from the hopshopuk.com - this is much better than dispensing from a plastic barrel and as the beer is sealed (IMO)

a 1/4 pint cylinder will pull through 3/8 tubing fine
thats what i use on my pumps
my mate has half pint cylinders and he needs to use about 1/2 inch tubing as if if goes any smaller you have to pull the pump so hard.

getting and using 3/8 flexible tubing means you dont have to worry about twisting etc

I've ordered 1/2" tubing, as that's the size of the spigot thingy that the pipe connects to. The thing came with a jubilee clip on it, so no probs there.

And as per the beer engine tread, I'm going the polypin route. 8)

The postman brought my stuff this morning. :=P

2 sparlers (one of which was supposed to have large holes and the other which was supposed to have small holes, but which look identical to me apart from the colour  )

1/2" beer line

Drip tray.

What a pity they didn't come yesterday, so I didn't have to drink 4 pints with no head on them last night.

How did you cope... 4 pints... 8)

I'd really like to know how you get on with these Jim, I've never been able to find sparklers...

I could do with a couple and maybe a drip tray for my pump, but the minimum P&P seems to be £4.95, so it would be nice to make sure they work OK before I stump up the dosh!

...and thanks to monkey_doctor for the link.

Yeah, I made sure I ordered everything I needed in one go because of the p&p. Another thing to watch out for is that all the prices exclude VAT.

The sparkler fits the spout thread perfectly - I'll let you know how well it works tomorrow, but I flushed the lines through into a dish this morning and it didn't half put a head on the water! 8)

Here's the temporary set up I used last night for the prototype testing (before the drip-tray and sparkler arrived). :=P

Image

I filled the 2l fizzy drink bottle from my placcy barrel then just stuck the beer line in it. The bottle will be replaced by other vessels, as the occassion demands (e.g. 25l polypin for barbecues!)

Next step is to fasten a bit of spare kitchen worktop to the wall. I also think I can get a bit of temperature control by sticking the beer container into a dish/bucket of water which can then be maintained at the right temperature by addition of ice.

I like a bit of improvisation! :D

Thanks for the info, I didn't notice that VAT was added too. I'm also hoping to get mine ready for barbecue season and will be looking forward to a full report of sparkler performance later... 8)

Have fun!

Jim, are you sure that isn't a picture of the Sun Inn in Winchcombe?

Absent shelling out $300 to $400 for a proper handpump mine will have to be an adaption of a water pump.

It looks like it will be a great set up when complete.
