Corni problems

Post by kearnage » Wed Jan 24, 2007 2:47 pm

As some of you may have seen I've been waiting on my first corni keg to arrive from Norm and this morning the DHL man turned up right on time.

I was filled with excitement and unpacked all the kit ready to bask in the glory of its shiney wonder. All seemed great, until I went to test it.

I've partly filled the keg with water and put the top back on. I turned the keg upside down and nothing came out. I took the lid off, put more water in, closed the lid and turned upside down. This time the water poured out and I mean poured. I've tried about 10 times since then to put the lid on and create a tight seal and only managed it once.

The O ring arounf the lid is intact and looks pretty new. There are a few tiny dents around the lip of the opening on the keg but nothing major.

Am I just being stupid? is there a knack to putting these lids on? or should I be getting in touch with Norm to get the keg replaced?

I was so excited this morning. Now I'm deflated to say the least.

As an extra question: if I do get the hang of closing it, would soda crystals be good for cleaning it out?

They usually need to be pressurised to seal.

what Steve said.... with some positive pressure in the keg the lid will seal up.

Winner!!

Cheers guys.

The first time I sealed it I had warm water in there and I shook it a little which must have heated the air inside and created the pressure. After that it would have been cooling and creating negative pressure and hence it leaked.

I'm happy again

:D

Cheers for the tip DaaB.

I'll be getting my CO2 gas cylinder tomorrow so pressure shouldn't be a problem :)

Are soda crystals any good for cleaning it?

EDIT: Sorry guys after a bit of a search around the forum I found the info I wanted on cleaning the keg. All is good :)

I use soda crystals to clean mine if they're dirty, then Iodophor. Good luck with your cornie set-up - soon you'll have dozens

Been cleaning out two cornies this evening. Even after a long soak in soda crystal solution and a wipe inside with a pan scrubber thing (non-metallic!) the paper towel I used to wipe the inside dry still showed dirt up! It looked perfectly clean inside after the soda treatment so appearances can be deceptive!

Hi Guys,

Sorry if it's off topic but approximatley how much does a 1 corni setup cost? For everything you need to dispense from it?

Thanks :)

£35 to £45 for corni plus tap e-bay seller normannumpa is your best bet :)
A gas supply, widget world set up if you can source refills locally £36 or a pub type gas cylinder around £16 / refill and possibly a deposit on the cylinder of £25 plus a regulator for the gas bottle at around £25 to £35.
So not cheap initially but good value long term :D
Oh yes and lets not forget Shiny

Hi Hoppkins

I just bought the complete setup for £85 delivered.

That included

A Corni Keg
A Gas regulator
A Chrome tap
Approx 15 feet of piping
All fitting and connections for the piping and gas.

That was all from Norm.

I then got a CO2 cylinder from a local pub which was a £16.99 one off payment. There have been loads of discussions in the forum about where to get your gas if you can't source it from a pub.

I'm really happy with the setup I have now. The chrome tap was definitely worth the extra compared to a plastic tap.
