What do you use to clean your element?

Post by oblivious » Thu Feb 01, 2007 9:20 am

I was wondering what household products can be safely used on element to clean them up. As there is a bit of build up from previous brews, an I am afraid of it could affect the element.

Citric acid + water, turn the element on until water approaching boiling point and then leave for a bit. Have to scrub the element (when cold) also to get rid of persistent gunk, do this first then finish with the citric.

Washing up sponge soaked in vinegar.

Give the element a wipe to coat it in vinegar; let it stand for a few minutes; scrub it a bit with the sponge. Stuff comes right off.

I just give them a scrub with a spongey pan-scrubber or brillo pad. Might try the vinegar idea - I don't think I have citric acid lying about.

Kettle descaler - that's usually citric acid.

Vinegar (acetic acid) should be fine. :wink:

I use citric acid although I need to see if I can find a cheaper source - running out.

After about a 10 minute boil, I pour out the water, remove the element and scrub with a green scourer. Comes up a treat - don't worry too much about those hard to reach areas....

I use Lime lite limescale remover (contains sulphamic acid :shock: ) works a treat, paint it on with a nylon brush leave for 1 minute while it fizzes rinse thoroughly :)
As an aside when I was last in the local pharmacy I asked for citric acid and was told that they would not sell it any more as it was being used for drug making :? I can still buy it in the hbs though

And I thought Lactose was the only home brew ingredient that was used in Drug Making (I saw one home brew store saying that if you bout more than 2kg then they had to notify the authorities)

I'll try and hunt down a cheap supply. Definitely useful stuff.

Just a Soap

5kg = £8.99
P&P = £5.53

£14.52 for 5kg

Compare this to The Home Brew Shop

1kg = £4
P&P = £6.50

£26.50 for 5kg

I reckon they're saying that you can't order as many 25kg bags of materials as you want for £6 shipping.

From http://www.emporiumuk.biz/General_Infor ... _rates.htm
Orders over £50 = Carriage FREE
Orders under £50 = £6 carriage charge

Our standard carriage charge for furniture items and bulky raw materials is £6.00 for the first parcel and £4.50 for subsequent parcels.
If you put 2 25kg bags in the basket, carriage comes up as free.

Even if carriage is charged, £35.50+VAT aint bad for 25kg delivered. 8)
