is it necessary / advisable to strip and clean the vent and gas valves from the cap before each use, or just soak in situ?

When I need to use citric acid, for example cleaning the kettle element of my boiler, I just squeeze a lemon in - that seems to work, although you would need to alter the amount used.

Excellent, thanks Daabs / BD. As soon as it was mentioned it can be got from the home brew shop I remembered buying a tub donkey years ago, to enhance the effectiveness of Sodium Met, if memory serves. Curiously, I've not seen the combination mentioned at all these days.
