Immersion V counterflow wort chillers

Post by tubby_shaw » Sun Feb 11, 2007 3:26 pm

I have a question for you who have converted from immersion to counterflow.
Have you noticed more trub on your yeast crop in the primary ?
I ask because I cannot get my head around what happens to the cold break material :?
When I use my immersion chiller the cold break material is filtered out by the hops along with the hot break.
So using a cfc it must end up in the primary and I assume that you skim it off :?:

Just curious :)

Yes it ends up in the fermenter (as it does for all commercial breweries by the way  ). Some of it appears in the initial yeast head and can be skimmed if that's your thing....

What!? Nobody filters trub through the hop bed anymore? Oh woe!

What I've seen mentioned is an idea whereby those using a CFC or plate chiller can use a pump to recirculate cooled wort back into the boiler. Switch off when at the right temperature, then filter the cold break through the hops. Is it worth it? Dunno. Most of the trub comes up with the first yeast head. I'd get rid of it then..only takes 5 mins, and makes subsequent racking easier.

As far as I'm aware breweries don't pass the output of the plate chillers through any kind of filter before entering the fermenters....

Oh, have you seen this! http://www.mrmalty.com/chiller.php
