Spinny spargers - Wherefore art thou?

Post by notassuch » Mon Feb 12, 2007 2:26 pm

Firstly I'd like to say hi!
Just registered this morning, but I've been glued to the forum for the last few weeks reading your great advice and opinions as I prepare to start AG brewing.

So, I've got my Thermos cool box and copper piping, dropped an order through to Leyland this morning for a boiler, bins and all manner of sundries, but I've hit a snag....

I'd like to fly sparge with the comfort of a spinny arm, but finding Phil's rotating sparge arm very hard to come by in the UK.
After a couple of hours of Googling and several phonecalls, it seems that they are no longer imported and finding someone with existing stock has drawn a blank so far.

Ultimately, ordering direct from the US and a cack-handed DIY attempt are both options, but wondered if anyone could recommend a known source.

Thanks.

The HopShop sell 'em

http://www.hopshopuk.com/cgi-bin/browse ... =106911337

but they're on their hols for a fortnight.

The hop and grape also list them

H&G were the first to advise me that they were no longer imported and they were out of stock. Guess they just need their website updating.

I guess I'm just being impatient with the Hop Shop. The 28th is a long time to wait when you're itching to get started.

Thanks for the reply though.

Hehe awwww. But I wanted to sit and watch it going round!
At this point it looks like I will be, not that I have any problem it doing it the less efficient way. (Ow! Who threw that!?)

Thanks DaaB.
When I phoned before placing my order this morning, the lady I spoke
to said that they didn't have any on the shelf, but it would be worth
phoning back tomorrow as Joe is back and he might, "Have some in
the back." That's just what I'll do. :)

Blimey, I'm glad I replaced mine a few months back. I wouldn't be without mine.

I hope you find one soon.

Not a good development! I wonder what the problem is - it's hard to believe they aren't selling well.

Can anyone in the trade shed any light?

Thanks Phil.
Fingers crossed. Mind you, with the exchange rate, getting one shipped
over from America won't really break the bank.

i tried to get a "phils phalse bottom" a few months ago fo some reason and was told that they had stopped getting them in, they could order one from the states though, i presume this is the same phil and that his range is slowly being withdrawn :(

Looks like you might have hit the nail on the head.
I've emailed Beer Tech (as DaaB suggested) about the situation and I'll report back come the reply.
... and I thought the Thermos cool box was hard to find with the advent of
fabric cool boxes. Phew!

Hi notassuch. How about some 15mm pipe secured in your cool box mash tun lid?
I've got on very well using this design for both doughing in & sparging with slots @ ~1" intervals.
http://www.willmottw.fsnet.co.uk/brew/equipment/
Image in the middle shows it standing proud of the cool box lid so some people presume that it's spinny.
In reality this was just before I drilled a hole in the lid and shoved it through & put on one of these -

Frothy that looks brilliant.
Is it difficult to gauge the rate of sparge water vs the run-off (or does this not matter a great deal) being an enclosed unit?

Just a quick update.
Joe at Leyland says the same. Brupaks have stopped importing Listermann
products altogether as they were not making enough money on the trade
price, despite selling rather well.
So looks like we're getting our sparging arms and Phil Mills from
America.
