Bad Dog Two - 120L Brewery

Post by adm » Thu Apr 01, 2010 9:18 pm

I thought I'd start a separate thread for this.....

I picked up two of the eBay special 120L boilers this afternoon from the now defunct Jugg Foods Plc. in Queens Park this afternoon. I could only get two in my car, but I've got my name on two more if I want them.

First of all, a word of warning. These are BIG pots.

Image

Really big.

With big stainless steel paddles that weigh loads by themselves.

Image

The bloke that's selling them is the ex-Chairman of the company - Roger. Nice bloke - it's a shame to see he couldn't make money from the factory - it employed 130 people.

He asked me what I wanted them for. When I told him it was for brewing, he said he'd had quite a few calls or emails from homebrewers over the last 48 hours. I told him about JBK.....

Anyway, I've now got these things unloaded, but that's about it for the night. They weigh a lot. 50kg+. Each one has what looks to be a multijet "wok" type high power burner mounted underneath it.

I'll investigate more tomorrow....

£200. I've only bought the pair so far.

I know. Some of them have even got socks. I'll need to get those back and put them up on eBay.

They are so awesome that I am questioning my original plan of having three set up side by side. The brewery would be the size of a family car. It would have to have heavy duty pneumatic tyres. I'm still discussing it with my wife.....

Here's a few more pics......next I need to take the things apart and give them a really deep cleaning. I think I'll need to buy some industrial degreaser as there's the remains of a million ready meals on the bottom of these things, despite the outsides being clean....

Image
Big chunky taps. I guess these are 2"

Image
With butterfly valves. These fittings will be too big, so I'll need to find a way to adapt them down to 22m or 15mm - something a bit more usable anyway. I wonder if I can get some form of triclamp adaptor....

Image
Here's the underneath. Needs a good scrape and degrease....I'll save that for a sunny weekend day with the pressure washer...

Image
And the gas valve assembly with the shroud removed. More lovely grease....

Image
Here's one of the burners pulled out

Image
And the whole assembly ready to degrease and take to bits for cleaning. It looks like the gas valve has one main port for the burner, plus a pilot and a flame detection cutoff. Don't know if i'll use the same approach....I'll probably rebuild with solenoid valves and see if I can figure out a piezo ignitor.

Now - as to the burners......does anybody know the key difference between Natural Gas and Propane? If I understand correctly, the pressures are completely different - but with an adjustable propane reg (which I have), I should be able to get pretty close to the same pressure? If I can do that, will the burners run on propane? I'm going to clean them up anyway and have a play. If not, I'll offer them here and replace them with propane units....there's 20 jets on each one, so getting replacement jets would probably cost as much as just buying new burners. Failing that, short term my Bullfinch will fit nicely under these pots if needed.

Afaik, the difference will be in the density of the gas and thus the calorific value so to acheive the same heat output from burning the gas the flow will have to be higher or lower than the other. You can get, or alot of gas cookers come with, a different set of jets so that you can operate on natural gas or bottled propane. The only difference between the jets is the size of the hole which, iirc, are smaller for bottled gas suggesting the flow should lower for propane. Maybe you could get away with just a lower setting on the hot and cold dial.

A good old fashion google session should make it clearer.

Very nice indeed. If you are ok with the manual approach 3M's scotchbrite pads are excellent. They can be adapted with a cable tie to fit on flappy wheel drill drives as well. That's a brilliant family shot. I'd be framing that and putting it up in the new brewery.

It would appear that the exhaust fumes are ducted round the inner vessel and out through a chimney near the top.
If so it is quite easy to visualise one of these as your new boiler.
The space between inner and outer appears to be 75mm or so. Are you thinking of getting some insulation into this gap for the mash tun, or using the second vessel as the HLT? Of course, with RIMS you don't need to insulate be it offends my greener inclinations!
On the other hand, a third identical vessel would make a very attractive and symmetrical line-up....
Or is it all still a twinkle in the eye? In that case, keep the twinkle focussed on the new brewery otherwise there could be more kids than corneys.....
