Budget Barrel lids

Post by Bobwagon » Tue Feb 20, 2007 9:58 am

Does anbody have experience of these lids nacking up ?. I Had a batch kegged in my budget barrel (which for some reason i prefer to my king kegs), until i awoke to a distinct hissing sound
after determining this wasnt from the PRV i decided to attempt to re seat the lid... however it then became apparent either the lid has become distorted or one of the threads has become nackered (no obvious visible signs of damage on the threads). The threads engage up to a certain point then one side of the lid lifts until it pops off. If this has happened to anyone else im just wondering two things...

1) If i were to buy a new lid, can u interchange the s30 valve onto a lid which comes only with a safety valve... im guessing not since that would save me 6 quid
2) If either thread is susceptible to wear, is it the barrel  or the lid thread :)

What fun i had racking from one keg to another  Thanks for any advice chaps

I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to change the valve! I think the HB S30 valve (which seems to be on anything and everything) is standard, so you should just be able to unscrew it. I took mine off my KK to clean it up with a dremel.. it had all oxidized.

The only problem I have had with the lids is due to over tightening and cracking the base (and damn is that sharp - ripped my hands to shreds!). Fortunately although cracked no pressure was lost for me so I was able to wait until the keg was empty before replacing the lid.

I only ever use lids with the s30 valve (just in case) and have never bought the 'saftey valve only' lid. I assume you could just cut a hole in the lid and put in your s30 valve, but I have never really checked.

I have had them distort on me :(
My fault though
Rinsed off with boiling water to sanitise, screwed onto barrel and gassed. Instantly distorted lid
They should be available ready drilled from your HBS for aroubd £4 to £5 50p for an S30 valve washer, simply unscrew the valve and swap it over 8)

I got my lid replacement =D> Went along to my LHBS. He only had the lids with pressure relief valve, and the S30 equipped lids. However he was happy to remove the s30 and sell me the lid for £1.60, No drilling required so im happy with that :D

I spoke to Hop and Grape who have now placed the lids on their website.

Ordered myself 3 so I am happy with that :)
