First outing for shiny boiler tomorrow!

Post by Jim » Fri Mar 02, 2007 8:59 pm

Just been setting things up for the morning:

Recipe:

4kg Marris Otter
250g Wheat Malt
250g Crystal Malt
250g Torrified Wheat

Hops – some combination of Challenger and Goldings to about 25 EBUs

Yeast - Gervin Ale

I filled the boiler by tube: -

All set to drop the hot mash liquor into the tun in the morning (my old boiler)

Thanks, chaps. Yep, that's a new recipe and the extra wheat is indeed to help head retention when pulling from the beer engine. 8)

I'll still be mashing and sparging in a similar way, but the old boiler will become my HLT - this will save heating up the water in a pan, as I used to do before adding to the old HLT, which had no heating element.

I'll obviously have to go through a process of honing my brewing procedure to fit the new gear, so things may change. :=P

15 amp jobbie, EB. 8) Good luck with your own brew.

I'm about half way through the boil now, all going very well, touch wood. I saved about half an hour in getting up to the boil by putting the gas ring on as well as the element. :=P

Here's a few pics.

I collected enough in the ss boiler to cover the element -

Then lifted the boiler onto the cooker and continued collecting in a plastic fermenter, transferring into the boiler as I went.

The wort was boiling its bum off before I'd even finished sparging - I turned the gas off once it got to the boil, cos it was scaring me!

Boil will be over at 10:15.

Looking good Jim. I'm 30 mins into the mash now - going to start a thread shortly.

Did you post some info about your new boiler while I've been busy these last couple of months? - I'd be interested to know more about it - what it looks like inside, did you buy or built it etc...

Nice elecky/gas combo approach there Jim, like it 8)

Have you always transferred the sparge output into the (elevated) boiler in stages or is this a new technique for the new equipment ?

No, that's new. I used to collect the lot in the placcy boiler then boil on the floor and lift up to the bench for the run-off - very hazardous and I'm glad to have designed that out of the system!
