Shiny Electric Keggle (many pics)

Post by bryanferry » Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:33 pm

Having lurked on this site for a while I thought I would share what I've ended up with and say thank you for the wealth of information I've gained from everyone else's posts.

After getting good BIAB results from my plastic electrim boiler I decided on an upgrade to something a little more shiny. Luckily at the time another member of this fourm was selling a keg he'd already started to modify. A money exchange later I had this fantastically made item.

Next to get operational was drilling and fitting the 3kw element, temp probe and heating thermostat (with much help from a local plumber).

As with all things its a work in progress and cost more than budgeted. Plan is to use as a single vessel unit for BIAB. Plenty to tinker with and upgrade as this addictive pursuit dictates (a shiny socket box/ sight glass etc).

Not sure how it became so shiny AceMcAce, all the hard graft in sourcing, cutting off the top, cleaning up the sides and sorting the ball valve was already done. The sad thing is I may well have to shroud it to prevent significant mash temp loss. I quite liked it as a sculptural piece of modern brew art.

I contacted keg watch a couple of weeks ago about a stray half size keg outside a church that I drove passed. It was nowhere near a tavern so someone must have taken it for a walk and got bored. Never got a response from them. It was gone the next day so I hope it was returned and promptly put back into service.

Shiney indeed!

Presumably you're going to cover up the external element terminals/wiring ? Please tell me you are going to do this :)

Andy, I quite liked the industrial 'death trap' look but if you insist... :)

Id bought a double socket box but the keg widens making it difficult to house the thermostat and the element terminals in one. Now hunting for a small box to house just the terminals and then seal all the wires prior to first use.

Finally found the time to get all the terminals covered and a new brew bag sewn up. First test had it rolling 30 litres in under 30 mins. Next job is to buy some fresh grain and get the first batch under its belt.

Thanks Barneey, thats high praise indeed considering your efforts in all things build. I was going to ask you about a tea infuser you posted on another topic. The keg is bottom draining and I was hoping i could fit one as a hop filter. where can such a thing be purchased?

All the holes were with a q-max. As I'd never used one before, I was very happy with the very clean holes they make. Might use the 21mm again for a sight glass when i get around to sourcing parts (or more likely get lazy and buy the quality kit from the Malt miller).

I have just received the sight glass kit from the-home-brew-shop (I think that's the right number of hyphens) it's cheaper, but I also prefer the design... parts look good, and will fitting it later tonight(nothing against Rob, just prefer the look of this one)
