The shiney upgrade begins... (eventually!)

Post by alexe » Thu Nov 01, 2012 1:12 pm

Well after many months of planning, designing, experimenting, re-designing, thinking and re-re-designing the upgrade to a shiney new brewery is beginning!

My shiney stock pots arrived yesterday - 70l for HLT, 50L for Boiler, 33L for mash-tun and 33L for FV. (Got them from my local homebrew shop - bit more expensive than ebay or Bergland directly, but then no risk of having to pay the extortianate Swiss import duties.)

I am planning a two tier HERMS system, like this

using an Arduino based controller to control the HLT and HERMS, as well as log data.

Progress will most likely be slow (given how long it has taken me to get this far...), bit I will post pics and report on progress as I go...

(Sorry highlander)

Are you hard plumbing or silicon hose?

Used Google Sketchup...
Are you hard plumbing or silicon hose?
A bit of both. I plan to have copper pipe with silicon tube at either end for pumping the wort from the mash-tun to the boiler

I'm hoping to do an Arduino type application to my brewery. Are you writing the code yourself or have you downloaded it fom somewhere?

Cheers

The new brewery is starting to take shape...

The brewstand is now complete, varnished and in position. I would have preferred to have wheels but because of the drain the garage floor slopes, so I need to have height adjustable feet.

Image

The HLT is nearly complete - just need to sort out the electrics and calibrate the sight-glass

Image

The HERMS heat exchanger and the Mash tun are pretty much complete

The complete brewery

The new FV

One of the main objectives of the brewery was to make the brewery simple and easy to use. To prevent having to lift the boiler to drain beer into the FV, I put the boiler on the same level as the mash-tun and then plan to use the HERMS recirculation pump to transfer the wort. I added some pipe and then, by moving the HERMS return pipe, and adding a shor ttransfer hose, the wort can be transferred, like this

ImageImage

I can then use gravity to drop the wort from the boiler into the FV. The tap in the pipe, is to allow me to take wort samples for gravity and ph measurement during the transfer.

Now, just need to finish off the electrics, test for water tightness and do a dry run! The clock is ticking as the old brewery is no more and beer stocks are decreasing...

Nice to see someone else using the brass hozelock fittings to save money!

How are you finding them???

I'm slowly getting my HERMS set up are you going to insulate the pot or is that not really needed? I see you have quite small hose length for it too, where-as mine are quite long so I wasl planning to insulate everything..

Nice work, Alexe. Very smart indeed.

(Now you'll have to do something about that ugly old wort chiller on the wall. )

Thanks for the compliments - I hope it works as well as it looks... :D

In general they seem OK - I had one which jammed, but the rest work fine. Mine came from BES, and they are definitely cheaper than Camlock fittings...

I wasn't planning to, the heat exchanger keeps the temperature adequately. Probably not very efficient, but don't really want to hide the shiney SS....

Don't be rude about my trusty chiller!!! [-X

I have been considering moving to a counter flow or plate chiller but this one works well. I'm also still not convinced about which route is best, immersion or counterflow. Both have advantages and disadvantages and the merits of both have been debated at length on various forums.

Found a flaw in my design...

Getting the heat exchanger into position and back out again is a tricky, so fill have to fill and empty it in situ. Will need to add a tap of some sorts to fill and empty it...

](*,)

Apart from that the dry run went well :D

Now just need to sort out the electrics...
