have I ruined my regulator? Help!

Post by bob3000 » Sat Dec 01, 2012 8:21 pm

Familiar story I think. First time kegging, tried to force carb. Didn't realise I needed to purge keg before lowering psi to serving pressure. Couldn't understand why the pressure wouldn't go down so I just kept lowering that dail.
to round things off i went and gave it a shake with the gas line connected. I then turned the gas valve on and off and realised something was wrong when the keg pressure gauge read 0.

I have taken gas line off to have a look and the problem seems to be in the regulator. nothing comes out of the gas valve. And gauge reads 0 :(

What can I do??? surely I haven't ruined it already.

You sure you have gas left in the cylinder?

You said you lowered the dial.have you turned it back up again.....check to see if the gas is coming out before you re-connect it.

definitely gas in the bottle. there is no gas coming out, tried turning screw, tried taking off the gas line.

not sure what is going on.

I'm assuming its a co2 bottle not an S30 and your using Cornies.

Did you check the cornies for leaks at low pressure?
Sellers will often pressurise a corny to 60-70 psi to ensure it seals when they sell them, then when you try to use them they fail at low pressures and then drain your co2 bottle.

If this is the case, get some red o-rings (softer and help seal at low pressure) for your cornies

I think half the problem with people struggling to seal cornies is because they don't know how to do it properly but that's a side issue.

What you want is a check valve between your regulator and your gas disconnect. They're a few quid on eBay and connect like John guest fittings. Did beer travel up the gas line? If so it's possible you may have done some damage to your reg.

I don't think you've turned your gas bottle on? send us a picture of your reg and set up.

If I'm inderstanding correctly, you've done very little that would harm the regulator. Many regulators don't dump the pressure well but they aren't harmed (unless the corny pressure was spectacular!), and unless you shook it 'very' hard it should be okay. Sometimes shaking the keg and or releasing pressure quickly can cause the beer to foam and get back up into the regulator but I don't think you did that.

However, its happened before that people new to these things have become confused with the direction you turn the regulator's screw. It needs to go clockwise/in/harder to make more gas come out, which is a bit counter-intuitive as it feels like you're turning it off. And has been mentioned make sure the cylinder is on (which has a more conventional tap) in order to make the high pressure gauge show a reading.

Cheers
