mini keg storage

Post by Fil » Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:51 pm

ive used a couple of 5l minikegs for the first time recently.. the beer has gone now and i have cleaned and sterilised them and put he dust plug back in to keep dust out, but have not been able to get the last drop of steriliser (videne solution) out. The videne will break down very quickly...

Im concerned that this may develop into an anaerobic environment where nasties will grow over time?

i tried evaporation by sitting the kegs ontop of the living room radiator minus dust plug , no joy??

is this a real concern or am i chasing my tail????
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Try getting in touch with stu-le-brew on here, he's something of a mini keg guru. I just keep a splash or two of StarSan in mine, they get a periodic shake up and then I tip out when ready to use. A good shake tends to get most of the droplets out.

cheers Steve.. it sounds like starsan which is a persistant steriliser rather than the videne i have been using would be better for wet storage..

RR22, isnt the inside coated with a plastic protective film?? while i cant recall where i got that idea from, if correct direct or indirect high heat may be problematic our gas oven is a bit of guess work as the numbers were washed off the stove dials years ago ....??? though i would prefer to store the kegs dry...

I've had a torch in mine and I'm pretty sure the ones I get have a plastic liner. I would avoid heat at that level. Might be different types though but something to definitely be aware of!
