Yes,

I bought two kegs from Morrow Brothers £50 each fully reconditioned and plated with my brewery name and painted up in Man United colours( no one had those).

I didnt know at the time it would have been simpler to get the kegs with spears removed and cut them off, first off.

Nope I cut a chunk off the spanner end and made it from that :) as I`m no good at welding I just cut a thread for the bolt.

& yes if the 5p trick doesnt work its a real PITA

Cheers Mate ;)

I think the one I made the tool for must have had the easy safety clips, it was a 3 prong affair and made from thin stainless.

Clive, does your tool just hold the threaded part of the spear whilst pushing on the centre bit? A bit like the one I made?

Basically you insert the thing under the lugs and with a 5p in place to prevent damage to the spear screw the bolt into the fitting, if the spear had the simple fitting you could just lift it out, so not even a sankey required, if it doesnt lift out, by screwing the bolt down it opens a gap between the two seals enough to get a thin blade in & start poking around, couple of hours later and the thing released itself, not something I wish to do again + the tool I made has a habit of springing back out again :)

If the new kegs some with an easy clip I`ll leave those in place, if however they arrive with the same clip as before a simple tap with a screw driver knocks it off.

Credit for most of knowledge gained must go to the other barney :) with his other threads that have been posted on Jims.

I like the idea :)

The other thing I`ve thought of / idea is a large enough normal socket with an out dim of 45mm cut two slots in it & use it like a normal socket spanner.

I Just dont know what size socket is 45mm in diameter, anyone know?

It'll depend on the make and type, wall thickness varies a lot.

Take a pair of calipers into a tool shop :)

Agree with what gnutz2 said, wall thickness does vary - I've had a quick look at my sockets, largest I've got is 30mm, O/D on that is 40mm so I guess you'll be wanting something around 35-40mm.

I had wondered about that. It's bigger than I have in my tool box.
Hopefully big enough to allow you to weld a nut with a socket head cap screw in.

You would engage the lugs, Allan key through the socket. Push down in the release thing. Release the lugs.
Clip on a socket bar and remove the spear.

The largest socket I have is a draper 34mm thats a little to small for the job. So it might be a trip to halford to see if they have anything bigger?

So would agree with the above depending on make something 35mm onwared would work.

The alternative as gnutz has done is a piece of 45mm tube etc, only trouble I cant weld. Slightly of the subject, what is the cheapest welder I could buy for normal mild steel?

Cheers

Check out Aldi, my local branch has welders reduced to £30, they've been in for ages now. They need a separate fused 40A spur I think so I guess thats why they're not selling.
BTW I'm not a welder so I cannot vouch for quality

I`ll have a check tomorrow on way to Halfords to check out the 36 &38mm socket.

Just been to the local tool shop and looked at their sockets.

As gnutz as said it all depends on what type etc.

So would suggest measuring the socket for the outside diameter to ensure a good fit.
