Tribute mini kegs

Post by dean_wales » Sat Apr 27, 2013 10:09 pm

Just been supping ales at the food festival and picked up an empty Tribute mini keg that someone had left by the tent. Result.

So can I reuse it?

I have had to pop the the rubber bung out of the top to wash it up. Keg fine but bung not reusable.

The pull out tap seems fine.

Options???

No reason why you can't but from what I have read they are often made of mild steel so if you scratch the coating when trying to remove the bung it may rust and then be no good to you. I think the ones the homebrew shops sell are stainless and last longer. Definitely worth recycling though.

Perfectly reusable. I scratched mine and it rusted though.

You can get re-usable rubber bungs for 5l mini kegs. They have a central push through piece for if you're if using a top tap.

Those vent bungs also work with a top tap :)

Hi guys,

The bung cam out really easy, quite soft rubber so I am confident of no scratches.

Is there any way to force carbonate bright beer in these? I have a pub style has cylinder and regulator etc. Just need a way to hook it up. Mayhem get a couple of bungs and butcher one somehow to accept a john guest fitting or similar?

I think you'll manage a reasonable pressure in these but maybe not enough to get a good level of carbonation through force carbing. I've general seen people priming these to keg condition but someone might be able to say different.

I am willing to get it cold, be patient and only carbon to English ale levels if need be.

Just slashing them around in the car and tilting them to empty don't sit too well with sediment.

Maybe I should take a leaf from the jerry keg thread and fit a valve?

Just be careful drilling it as it will probably rust afterwards

Although if you could fit the valve through the bung (i.e.: instead of the red plastic bit) you could be on to a winner.

Although I doubt you would ever get the bung back out once it was in....

Someone else posted this. When you remove the rubber seal on the top fill the barrell with water the bung floats and is easy to get at?????

I'm still on the fence about 5l mini kegs. I've tried all sorts of dirrent priming levels to get a flood of foam for the first pint then a reasonable pint then nothing. Burst of co2 from the beer king top tap and another pint... burst of co2 etc etc To be honest, 1 full 16g co2 bulb per keg for approx 10 pints isn't worth the hassle. It's 20x 50cl bottles, beautifully conditioned and nicely carbed. I'll keep trying the kegs but, I'm erring towards just sticking with bottles. There's no way a customer would faff about the way i've been having to, to get a pint from a keg.
