wow, that's a brilliant build. Very jealous, mine is all in boxes after the build, I can't remember the last time I had a brew on.
I think i'll need to find an excuse to come past and pick up a spanner....

:) If your ever passing this way? although the next stop is Europe, how about a JBK jolly boys outing to Belgium?

Back to the brewery there are a couple of extra still hiding in the picture a couple of which involve the measurement side of things, basically a standard sight glass for the HTL but under both the Mash Tun and Boiler there is a set of electronic scales.

The therory being I can completely take detailed measurements throughout the brew process from liquid additions to dead spaces to liquid evaporation should make setting up BS2 quite straight forward and hope the brewdays are easily repeatable.

Still have to decide weather to use the plate chiller or the stainless covoluted stainless CFC & to trial the external hop filter.

The first brewday is going to be quite blind using this equipment.

That's a good idea with the scales a very precise and instant way of taking measurements.
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

I considered using scales but worries about how they would handle the heat and weight. What are you using, if you don't mind me asking?

Stainless postal scales (or vet scales) 20g increments upto 300kg in max weight as my pots are either Oak bottomed or thermo pots heat isnt an issue either. I used to use a dip stick for taking measurements but thought this was an easier solution. On the boiler side of thing actually measuring fluid loss + fluid in and out, also will help set up a sparge system on the mash side to fine tune things, if the MT contents weigh too much after sparging has started reduce the flow in and vise versa if it doesnt weigh enough.

Thanks, having a look for some. I'm going for 100l vessels... do you think 200kg max would be fine?

Working on the principle of 100l = 100kg can`t see why they wouldn't be, the pot + fittings will only weigh max of say 25 kgs + your never fill the pot right up.

(Tech info assumed sea level and certain temp for conversion)

Assumed that would be the case. I guess grain and water will be lighter than the same volume of water alone.

Yep even if you got say 20 to 25kg of grain in there your still be under the limit of the scales.

Anyone know what a 1 litre of wort weighs?

Well working on the theory if SG = 1.050 weighs 1.050 kg, it should be fairly easy to work out?

A litre of water should weigh 1kg , for the wort multiply this by the sg reading.

;) Cheers near enough double post :D

Never really brewed by weight before building this build but 120ltrs of wort at say 1.05 = 126KG so approx. 6kg heavier than water
