Leaking King Keg emergency

Post by lindsay » Sat Nov 23, 2013 1:00 pm

Hi
I just discovered my King Keg barrell has been leaking at the tap. It has a had batch of a Guinness clone in it for about a week. I had a few 1 litre plastic fizzy water bottles handy so I transferred all of the batch to them.
My question is, there was quite a lot of gas in the brew when I transferred it will I need to add sugar to the bottles as we'll or will they be ok as they are? When I shook one this morning it seemed to be very gassy.

Thanks

Lindsay

I wouldn't add more sugar at this stage, it'll probable be OK. The bigger concern is probably oxidisation due to the transfer. I'd leave them a week then try one to see if there is sufficient carbonation. If so get it drunk. If not maybe add a little more sugar - then get it drunk!

EDIT: Oh, and get a new tap for the KK.
Best wishes

Dave

A Dalex would be my advice, needs a bit of fiddling with but it is 10 times as good.
I am "The Little Red Brooster"

Yes I've heard they are good. I have one of those black lever types on mine which is much, much better than the drum type that they come with.

Thanks for the advice guys.
In regards to the dalex tap in your picture orlando what parts would I need to convert my barrell to the same as yours? It looks excellent by the way. My barrell is a bottom tap King Keg. I had replaced the old tap with one of the black water barrell taps. I thought it was ok but with the pressure build up after a week it must have forced a leak through it. The wife was not impressed with the puddle on the carpet in the spare room!!!

Cheers

Price varies fro £12 - 20. As you can see I replaced the outside tank connector for a brass one, I did this on the inside to but the KK one would do. I suggest a ss washer on the inside that just fits the Dalex shank and plenty of PTFE as the shank is smaller than the KK one.

Thanks. A note of caution I think. I noticed on ebay there are ones with and without flow control. I'm assuming that the ones with are the ones to go for.

Probably, this one isn't and I never found it mattered, as I have one with so have been able to judge. Flow control can make a difference on a cornie set up but on a KK it's marginal.

Ah, that's worth knowing, ta.

EDIT: BTW, do you have shares in a PTFE company, Orlando? :D
