Post by jmc » Tue Jan 28, 2014 10:59 am

Do you think its feasible to use a catering kettle like this 3.5L one as a HERMS vessel?

I'm using a 4ish litre stainless bucket with a 3kw element. The kettle seems similar in terms of power to volume ratio. My setup was able to raise the temperature to mash out in about 20 minutes when I brewed in 8C ambient temp and an uninsulated 100L stainless mash tun.
Drinking: AG#7 Final Sprint (APA), AG#8 Buckwheat Brett (Saison - Saison/Brett), AG#9 Helles Meister
Conditioning: -
Fermenting: Selection Pinot Grigio
Planning: Orange Blossom Mead, Mexican Honey Mead, Chocolate Stout

Sure!

I used 10mm copper pipe, coiled around a wine bottle - you can just make out the lead to the temperature sensor housed in a 15mm tee piece. It works like a charm!

Hi
What type of copper did you use, normal plumbers pipe or the aircon type which looks more pliable

Hi rimski,

I used plain ol' plumbers pipe. I took it very slow and steadily but still had a couple of small kinks. If i were to do it again with such a small radius, I'd use the sand in the pipe trick.

Cheers,
Jamie
