Cornie kegs V's king kegs

Post by PeterESB » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:45 am

Hi everyone :) . I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, so mistakes could be a plenty  . I'm seriously thinking about buying some cornie kegs, but what are the advantages of these over King kegs, which I currently use? Can anyone help  ?!

Hi Peter, welcome to the forum. I'm sure like me, you'll find tons of useful (ahem, and useless) info on this forum.

I've just bought myself 3 Corny's. I've used King Kegs for the last 2 years. My reasoning for changing, is the ability to keg the beer bright and force carbonate. That way allowing me to purge all the O2 from the keg and so removing the possibility of oxidising my precious nectar.

In doing this, I can also take my kegs with me when I go away for weekends or to party's etc. Obviously, King Kegs don't lend themselves to doing this so easily when beer is conditioning in the kegs & you have O2 present in the kegs.

Also, they look far cooler & shiny than King Kegs :P

If you haven't seen the excellent info DaaB has put on Jim's web site about Cornelius Kegs already, take a look at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jim.dunleavy/cornelius.htm. He tells you all you need to know about Corny's & how to use them.

reading other threads on cornies, someone called norm is mentioned a lot as being the man to know. do you know if he has any cornies at this time or can someone provide contact details please. what do i ask for? there seems to be a bit more involved in setting these babies up.

is shiny really best? i was going to barrel bright beer into plastic barrels with a bit of sugar for conditioning, as per dave lines bbltyb, or even 20 ltr polypins.

are spares only available from the states? its all very confusing  :stun

Just looked at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CORNELIUS-DE-JONG ... dZViewItem. Seems he has Corny's on there, but the prices are still "recently inflated". ;)

Current prices seem to be £25 + £9 postage = £34. That's a starting bid with 6 days left on auction and no bids so far...

Far better to go with the Hop & Grape recon ones now that DaaB mentions at the same price and Norms aren't reconned either.

Not sure in what way your contact is involved in the brewery trade. But I don't think Corny's were actually used for "brewing" as such. They were used I believe, in soft drinks dispencing in vending machines & bars. No harm in asking obviously.

Norm told me he used to work at Britvic and his son still has a management position there. So I guess as he still has contacts there, that's how he gets hold of them.

Apparently the soft drinks trade has pretty much changed over to the "Bag in a Box" form of dispencing now. So I've heard that the flow of Corny's onto the home brew market is beggining to slow up. So it may be wise to get in quick before prices start to climb even higher. No idea how soon this may be though.

The Hop & Grape Corny's don't come with the disconnects, so you'll need them also, at I think about £7.50 each.

so the cornies come out of machines - looks like i'm farting in the wrong bucket then - i thought they lived under the bar in pubs etc. thanks for putting me right :)

Hi PeterEsb

Welcome to the forum :)

I have two recipes for London Pride: one by Dave Line the other by Graham Wheeler. I have read elsewhere that DL's recipe tastes more authentic. Alternatively you could make Gales Best Bitter, which because of Fuller's antics I won't be able to buy in the pub anymore

Anyway, DL gives options of making 5 gallons or 25 litres. I'll give the recipe for 5 gallons as that seems to be the standard size for fermenters - if you want 25 litres let me know.

OG 1042

7lb Crushed Pale Malt
8oz Crushed Crystal Malt
1 tsp Irish moss
8 oz Demerara Sugar (during the boil)
1 oz Fuggles
2 oz Goldings (start of boil)
1/2 oz Goldings (stir in after boil finished)
1/4 oz Goldings (in secodary fermentation)
1/2 oz gelatine for finings (in secondary)
Demerara sugar (for priming barrel)

Racking gravity 1012.
Mash: 1.5 hours at 66 C.
Boil 1.5 hours.

Rack to secondary after racking gravity hit, add finings, leave a week in cool, rack to primed barrel.

You may want to up the grain bill a bit as DL is apparently famous as being mr efficiency! Daab suggested upping it by 20% when I made DL's version of harveys.

Wheelers version to follow....

QUOTE I've put this in the Recipe section too, Cheers...DaaB

camra's whats brewing has just popped through the door, front page headline being, 'BLACK DAY AS FULLER'S SWING AXE'. reading between the lines it doesn't sound like fullers are much interested in keeping any gales beers long term. :(

i feel obligated to support my hants brethren and add my piece to fullers management - why the duck don't you all go a take your heads for sh1t!
