new keg and widget gas system!

Post by bod » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:04 am

normannumpa came through with my keg, tap and quickdisconnects! and i have a new widget system in the post as we speak thanks to joe at leyland. :D he's such a helpful guy!

now, just need to get a refil for my old soda stream bottle and fire this up sometime over the weekend inbetween making another two batches..... i dont have a dedicated fridge as yet, but i do happen to have an old inline beer cooling system laying arround at the factory, which is odd since we have absolutely no use for such a thing in my line or work! a good clean and sanitise and it should come up nicely.

i love it when a plan comes together!

yeah i've read most of the stuff about cornies on this forum now! i know alot about them from the northernbrewer forum, but its always nice to have some readily available information from people on this side of the pond, even if they are on the wrong side of the scottish border.... ;)

Out of Interest, how much did norm charge for the corni? I'm looking at getting a couple but cannot decide whether to buy from him or the re-conned ones from H&G.

Did you get them from his ebay shop or contact direct? Are they the rubber topped ones? What is the tap like?

cheers

i paid 40 quid for the keg, which came with the gas and liquid disconnects, beer line tubing and a sparkler tap. i bought it from his ebay shop.

the one from norman was sanitised and presure tested, which is more than can be said for the one i got from a homebrew shop, which was filthy, and still had some coke syrup in it. that cost me £35 just for the keg! check what they mean by reconditioned, as i've found that most of the time all it means is a HB S30 valve fitted and some new o rings, but its really the poppetts that are the most important bit.

i have another one that i found in my friends pub/club, again, it was filthy and needed new poppets and o rings, but when its free you just cant complain!

DAAB,

Haven't you bought kegs from H&G?

What was your experience of their recon job?

cheers

Could someone PM me Norms email address? I'd like to contact him direct and see if he can give me a price for a couple of kegs and sundries.

Thanks

Found a source of Food Grade CO2 just down the road.

£10.70 for a 7 litre cylinder. No deposit or rental.

Is that a good price?

I think it must be the 7 lb one because he said it was around knee height.

Now I just need to get my kegs :D

QUOTE Its worth checking the popets though, all mine needed replacing in the end.
What should I look out for with the poppets?

Also, any tips for cutting line for john guest fittings?

Thanks DaaB.

I'll give it a go. My CO2 line is the rigid grey plastic. Don't think I'll get through it with a knife. I may have to invest in pipe cutters.

I seem to have some purple stuff in the bottom of my kegs. Norm said he flushed them with beer line cleaner. Do you reckon thats what this is? I've got some oxiclean that I'm going to give the things a good soak in anyway.

Also picked up my bottle of CO2. Its huge :o . For £10.70 its cheap, but its taller than the blooming kegs. Not so easy to move around. Ah well :D

Just had another sniff inside the keg. It definitely smells of blackcurrant!

How long have these kegs been out of commission? I don't ever recall getting blackcurrant out of a tap in a pub or in a drinks dispenser.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have a spanner that fits the disconnect nuts.
