Mashing Bin/Boiler Vs Insulated Mash Tun

Post by moorsd » Thu Apr 20, 2006 2:24 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum so just wanted to introduce myself!

I have been mashing for a while using the Electrim boiler with a mashing/sparging bag so it can be used for both processes. Having looked at the various options available I was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are of using the insulated mash tun over the method I'm using at present?

I know loads of people use them (and even make their own) but I just wanted to get some feedback before investing in one, just to get an idea of what I will be gaining (if anything) over the method I use at present??

Thanks in advance

Dan

Hi, Dan, and welcome to the forum. :D

Like you, I use an Electrim boiler with a grain bag for mashing and sparging, however most people on here use the insulated mash tun made from a picnic cooler.

I'm sure all our regulars will chip in soon, but the main advantage as I see it is ease of keeping the mash at the right temperature if you don't have the advantage of a variac (as I do) to feed your boiler element with just the right amount of power!

QUOTE I think you can get a cool box a little smaller than the Thermos box for £7 in ASDA,

£6.99 in Wilkos! :D

Welcome Dan!
