FVs - too big to move
FVs - too big to move
At what point would you consider a fermenter too big / heavy when full, to fill at the boiler and then move to you're desired fermentation cupboard?
When you reach this point what do you do?.. pump from boiler to fv then from fv to keg?

57 litres!! I use this to lift my FV's on to the table when transfering. Here seen lifting the malt tube from my 50 litre Braumeisterbigdave wrote:At what point would you consider a fermenter too big / heavy when full, to fill at the boiler and then move to you're desired fermentation cupboard?

WOWZA!! I've got 30l in a 50l fermenter at the moment and I thought that was getting difficult to hump around.
Re: FVs - too big to move
My first brew using my new and first brewfridge was done on Monday. My FV is a M/Miller 50 litre stainless stockpot. How I did it for my first in the fridge brew.I am 70 with a I C D Pacemaker and brew in the garage so I am not the strongest of chaps.
Raise the brewfridge on two pallets with a worktop on top . I have a half shelf in the fridge and have covered over to complete it. The stockpot sits on this shelf which now is a perfect height for syphoning. So I have to empty the boiler into the F V . I put a bottling bucket on top of the fridge with a transfer tube on the tap going into the F V. As the boiler drains fill up the bottling bucket and open the tap to transfer the beer into the fridge. When fermentation is finished I transfer by syphon from the raised fridge to 2 X 25 litre sterilised FVs under airlock for 7 days then fine and bottle. I use 15mm tube for syphoning I cant faff about waiting. I hope you can understand the basic method i use. By raising the fridge over 12" above the garage floor it works well.

Re: FVs - too big to move
My brews are all 45 litres and I never lift more than 3 litres at a time.
Re: FVs - too big to move
I just pump stuff if its more than 20L. I could probably lift it, I just don't see the point in knackering myself.
Re: FVs - too big to move
Hello darkonnis, how do you clean the pump , Do you use the small 12 volt pump?
Re: FVs - too big to move
I've done 60L brews that were really tough to lift. That's despite doing strength training

Re: FVs - too big to move
25l max in one lift for me... Anymore and I either pump or pour into vessels and transfer manually in batches (normally 15 litres at a time)

Re: FVs - too big to move
Question for the guys that pump. How do you stop the brew getting aerated, do you have a closed system or just risk it?

Don't discount the low cost method. I used to transfer in two or three bucket loads! Cheaper and more reliable than a pump and easier to clean.

Re: FVs - too big to move
I currently use gravity for transferring from FV to keg which requires lifting up to a bench, typically 25l so not a problem but much more and it becomes a consideration, hence the pumping/aeration question. I'm going to move to pressurised conicals allowing for a closed anaerobic system, but using a pump with a standard set up like my current one would concern me. Should it?boingy wrote:Don't discount the low cost method. I used to transfer in two or three bucket loads! Cheaper and more reliable than a pump and easier to clean.

Re: FVs - too big to move
i pump from the kettle thru chiller to FV and let gravity fill the serving vessels. its easier to sanitise on the hot side, aeration is a benefit pre fermentation so much so i use an s shape tube hook over the fv lip to fountain the wort into it,
I will attempt to lump about well sealed vessels upto about 25-30l but not snap shut lidded buckets
someone smart uses a hydrolic scissor lift trolley..

As you say the hot side aeration is of course "desirable" but post ferment is where it gets tricky.Fil wrote:i pump from the kettle thru chiller to FV and let gravity fill the serving vessels. its easier to sanitise on the hot side, aeration is a benefit pre fermentation so much so i use an s shape tube hook over the fv lip to fountain the wort into it,
