Using Cornies

Post by eskimobob » Sat May 20, 2006 6:34 am

Last night I racked my Waggle Dance from the secondary FV into one of my Cornie kegs. This is the first time I have used one and can't seem to get the beer dispensing correctly <_<

I'm using a former Carlsburg tap that is fitted with a sparkler. I've had the sparkler unscrewed almost off and I've tried low pressure and higher pressure but the problem persists. The line to the tap is clear so I can see the beer and as the it flows up the line, gas seems to be bubbling along with the beer. I therefore get a very frothy hissing output from the tap :(

I ought to say that the beer is at room temperature and pretty flat; I seemed to get a similar effect when I syphoned it from the FV to the keg - gas in the syphon tube.

I was expecting to get a steady flow of beer and then to tighten the sparkler to get a head - anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Right, sorted it :D

I was confused that nothing I seemed to do made a difference to the gas in the pipe (higher gas, lower gas, warmer, cooler etc) and when I got my second cornie going tonight with the Stout, I finally reached frustration point and decided it had to be something wrong with the keg itself.

I have just let the gas out and removed the down pipe. When I got it out of the keg, I noticed a very small hole in the pipe near the top which explains things. At the same time as beer has been going up the pipe, gas has been getting in at the top of the tube and mixing with the beer

Obviously all my cornies are second hand so I guess I can't complain. I got my third (and last) cornie out of the loft and took the down pipe out of that to put in the Waggle Dance keg and hey presto, beer dispensing nicely :) :)

Now I need to get a new downpipe which I presume should not pose too much of a problem although I guess I will have to get it from the US. I could probably do with a few sets of o-rings too. If I order some from the states does anyone else want any at the same time??

Thanks Daab, unfortunately the hole is about 10mm from the top hence it is inside the sleeve. I assume you don't have a spare tube as well as the o-rings?? ;)

IF it won't take solder can't you cut off the offending top bit and lengthen the bottom with tubing?
<_<

I thought about the liquid metal but wasn't sure if it would have any adverse effect on beer so didn't mention it.

QUOTE Cutting it off (and lengthening the bottom with poly tube) would work if you know someone who can flare the top for you.

A place that makes up car brake pipes, perhaps?

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 27 2006, 11:24 AM) better off using one of those two part chemical metals for simplicity, they can be filed and sanded to finish.

I work for an adhesive manufacturer and we make Epoxy putty (AKA chemical metal)

If you like I can talk to one of our chemists to see if it will be ok in this application (can't see why not as it's used to mend holes in water tanks etc!), then send you a tube f.o.c if you like???

You're a star moorsd. Would be much appreciated if you think it is a possible solution. Cheers :beer

No worries, anything to help out a fellow Home brewer!!

PM your address and I'll send you a tube once I've confirmed it's ok to use it!
