Blichmann Conical

Finally finished the upgrades to my Blichmann conical

Lid mounted :- thermowell, cooling coil & additional CO2
Main:- Additional sample valve port, butterfly valve now replaces the bottom ballvalve dump, small milk churn for blow off.

Note the larger coil by the side is for use with the conical extension piece.
Hair of the dog, bacon, butty.

do you add co2 just to purge before adding the wort, or do you add afterwards to increase the protective layer?

To help run off from FV to Keg, as the conical is air tight, if you start the run off it will simply start sucking on the blow off tube (or air lock if you don't use a blow off) the result is unwanted liquid being drawn into the FV. You could of course just remove the airlock or blow off but then you are sucking in o2, the idea is reduce the amount of o2 that gets to see the beer. It also means you can pump the beer out with co2 so no manual pump required.

It's good to see it now it's finished.

Did you end up replacing the corny style lid in the end? I thought you were but the original PRV in the pic made me wonder if you'd changed your mind.
