Kegerator construction
Kegerator construction
I'm looking to build a kegerator, 2nd hand fridges and small chest freezers are readily available for under £100 and with a gas bottle and regulator all I need to do is buy a cheap tap from ebay and drill some holes in the fridge to fit it all on/ in - easy! Also hoping to use it as a lagering fridge.
Has anybody built one or know of any suitable fridges that could accomodate a couple of cornys or one 50L beer keg?
thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,
I recently finished building mine. It holds 2 cornys (the gas is housed next to it in it's own little cupboard).

Took me a while to find a suitable fridge. In the end I cut out a couple of pieces of paper sized to the footprint of a corny to measure fridges in stores - not too many strange looks! Many fridges are not deep enough as the shelf at the back where the compressor etc is housed takes much of the depth (although you can gain a bit of extra depth if you remove the moulded panel on the inside of the door and replace it with some perspex or similar). In the end I bought a Frigidaire RL6003B. The other thing to look out for is where the thermostat and light assembly is. If it's on the side make sure it doesn't get in the way of a keg - my right hand keg just fits underneath it. If it's on the top (or near the front) be careful if you intend to drill holes in the top.
Good luck with yours.
Jason

Thanks for all the kind comments! It was a prerequisite of the 'permission' that it looked reasonably good as it is in the corner of our kitchen/breakfast room (about a stride away from where I sit to eat most meals!).
The fridge thermostat is on it's lowest (highest temp) setting and it maintains around 12 degrees. Perhaps a bit cold, but I think I can live with it - in this weather I prefer a slightly cooler pint anyway. I have read that it's a relatively simple process to replace the thermostat should it be required.

Thanks for the feed back about the stats Jason. That's interesting to know that it will maintain 12'c without replacing the original stat.
I have been contemplating a fridge for a while. But wonder if I might replace the original stat though. As I was thinking I could ferment in one too at around 18'c in summer months.

Thanks for the tips she's a beaut! When I finally find a suitable fridge I'd like to fit a standard beer keg in there occasionally (not not at the same time as 2 cornies) maybe I'm being a bit naive on that one. On that note however I've thought one of the cheapest options might be a small chest freezer with the added digital thermostat
(loving the cobra font btw)
thanks

£99
I'd rather wait for someone to finnish with it & be chucking it out I think. Still, £99 isn't a bad price for a fridge.
With the crisper box at the bottom like that, there's a good chance it would have enough floor space for a couple of cornies though.
The only problem with Argos is, you don't get to see & measure up before you buy. You'd have to find it at another retailer & then go back to Argos if it's ok.
